No tsunami warning at present but thats a pretty big quake.

* 6 km (4 miles) SSE (154°) from Christchurch, New Zealand
* 222 km (138 miles) SSE (157°) from Westport, New Zealand
* 306 km (190 miles) NE (35°) from Dunedin, New Zealand
* 309 km (192 miles) SSW (213°) from WELLINGTON, New Zealand

There have so far been no reports of any damage or casualties.
The Pacific Tsunami Warning centre has reportedly said that "no destructive widespread tsunami threat" exists.
The Christchurch-based newspaper, The Press, said aftershocks were ongoing and that the electricity supply appeared to have been knocked out across much of the city.

Bob Parker the mayor is talking about 'significant minor damage'. It was about a 7.4 I think. Looting has been mentioned. The whole central city area is out of bounds. No electricity people are being urged to save water and stay indoors.

The initial reports in Aus certainly mentioned 7.4, but after that they've varied between that and 7.0 Also now reporting an aftershock of 7.0.

Hope all ok. Have seen pictures - not looking too good. Reports of looting, airport closed as are bridges.
