Early Morning Cock Problem... Help Needed!

Got your attention? Good. Really simple. Got 5 chickens. Only now they've grown, one isn't. It's a cockerel and its early morning crowing is driving me nuts :curse:. No complaints from neighbours... yet, but expect there will be soon!

Has anyone got any ideas that will work to either lessen the noise or stop him crowing till a more reasonable time of morning?

(OH has already suggested stock pot)

I don't really want to get rid of him as they're the kids chooks and they're actually really happy one's turned out to be male - they keep checking the coop for baby chickies

Have you heard the song that sounds sort of like an old country song?

It goes like this " Has anybody seen my cock? My big road island red. He stands straight up in the morning and gives my wife a shock. ...."

It is really funny.

Hi Mandie

We had chooks when we were kids and they used to get shut in a VERY dark coop for the night. That should solve the problem, otherwise, I'm sure Mark will be talk of the smoko room by the end of next week :rofl:

Re: Early Morning Cock Problem... Help Needed!

Thanks guys. The fattest chook is already called Vinny (short for vindaloo)!
They do get shut in at night but the coup's quite big (like a shed) and its got like a chicken wire 'window' at the top so me thinks we need to cover that somehow to keep it dark.

I did google for solutions. Aparently the City of York suggested putting a sock over the cockerel's head!!! No animal lovers on that council then

And no CAN2NZ - haven't heard that song! Sounds funny tho - where can I get hold of it?

Thanks for advice so far

You could try stretching its neck, it would shut him up.

Not very helpful i know, but someone had to say it :D

It is a funny song, I just googled it, but I didn't get a music file, just title and artist. It is really about a chicken, but it may not be, it has lots of double entondre (sp?)

You guys must be running a virtual farm over there now. You should come over on Sunday afternoon and have a look at my vegie garden. It has lots of nice black soil, can I grow anything that isn't silverbeat right now?

Re: Early Morning Cock Problem... Help Needed!

lol! would try any root veg, other than potatoes. i think last winter we grew silverbeet, cabbage, brocolli, cauliflower, onions. This year we've still got swedes and parsnips and onions in but aren't planting anymore yet as we're going to let the chooks clear the veg patch, then give it a good dig over and rest and will get going again in a few months.
will ask OH about Sunday as we have failing miserably in getting round to see you yet :o

Was hoping for more from this thread but hey.......dark house might help and restricting headroom as they need to stretch neck to crow - problem if they're in a shed...would recommend the pot;)

Re: Early Morning Cock Problem... Help Needed!

I knew a guy years ago and he had the same problem in Battersea:curse:.
He watched his cock (sorry) every morning and finally decided if he raised the perch the cock stood on.....It wouldn't be able to strech fully before bonking its head on the upper floor of the coup.
Result.............. it didnt let rip a good one ever again.

I belive it worked....:confused:I left uni a week later and never saw him again.

lateral thinking...if you don't use a coup, maybe you'll have to tie a elastic band from lower beak to claw.... just a little to short?

My grandparents used to keep chooks when I was little and the answer is to have the cock's perch too high so that he can't stretch his neck, just like someone else mentioned. I used to sleep over theirs frequently and was never woken by the cock. Also they lived in a residential area and never had complaints from neighbours.

Hope that helps.

Re: Early Morning Cock Problem... Help Needed!

many thanks for all the suggestions . will try and do some adaptations to the coup this weekend. One problem though is that he doesn't always sit on the perch to crow; midday he struts around the run crowing away! I don't mind that so much though, its just the stupid o'clock bit I want to lessen. We're going to try and put a door on one of the nesting boxes which are dark and shut him in that each night and I'm hoping that will be low enough to stop him stretching his neck too - if not will have to put in a lower 'ceiling' aswell.
I'll try anything humane as I really don't want to get rid of him.

Check out your local council bylaws as i believe you arent allowed roosters in town thats the way it was when we were farming, laws may have changed by now though.

All we were told was that it was ok so long as neighbours were happy. No-one's complained yet but I've got really lovely neighbours and certainly don't want to upset them or disturb their sleep - hence my post here to try and find ways to minimise the dawn chorus.

You could always say you are doing your bit towards the power crisis by not needing to have an electric alarm clock lol mind you i have been on the recieving end of being woken up by a darling cockrel and it wasnt when i was farming it was when i moved into town lol (murphys law or sumat lol)

My partner at the time was very miffed that these chooks kept waking him up so one night when we were having a party he (unbeknown to all us revellers) jumped the fence, suddenly the door opened and 2 chickens were running round the lounge like crazy things (not suprised they were prob scared stiff) in the end they joined in the party hopped up on the bench and said partner returned them to the chook house.

But someone must have complained about the roosters noise because not only the rooster but all their chickens, rabbits, guinea pigs and bird aviary dissapeared now they only have a dog that barks occasionally it truly was an awful sight as we had the best view lol we were in a 2 story house it stank like a pig sty in the summer (we used to call them the good life lol):)

More like fingers typing independently of mind, but thanks for your helpful hint. I have been to Rhode Island a number of times and so know how to get there.

Thanks again everyone. OH made some alterations to the coup this weekend and has added a wooden sliding door to one of the nesting boxes to make it nice and dark. Didn't stop the dawn chorus tho, so Sunday he added a 'false ceiling' to that nesting box to restrict the cockerel's head height and those two combined seem to have done the trick!

Still woke at stupid o'clock this morning tho to listen out for him to see if he was gona crow or not! but didn't hear a peep out of him

Congratulations...glad to hear you've put a stop to the dawn chorus...

You've done the right thing restricting the head height - the trick with stopping roosters early morning crowing is that you have prevent them from stretching out their necks and throwing their heads back in order to cockadoodledo and restricting their head height does just this...

It may seem a bit cruel but it's not half as cruel as waking up your neighbours at daft o'clock every day!!...:D

Re: Early Morning Cock Problem... Help Needed!

Here is that song I was mentioning, I hope it is not too colourful for the forum.

The Cockerell Song
by Ivor Biggun
From the Album: "More Filth! Dirt Cheap"

Some folks like a pussy, a budgie or a tit
Some take up with a Spaniel pup
That fills up the house with [woof, woof] shit
Myself now I keep chickens
And I've a favourite one
He's Dick my little cockerel
And I don't know where he's gone

[Chorus]
Has anyone seen my cock
My big Rhode Island Red
He's mostly pink with a little bit of blue
And purple on his head
He stands straight up in the morning
And he gives my wife a shock [scream]
Has anybody seen, anybody seen
Anybody, anybody seen my cock

He's a stiff necked little upstart
And I've known him all my life
He's my pride and pleasure
And a torment to my wife
Sometimes he's magnificent
And sometimes small and thin
But he puffs up like a pigeon
When you tickle him under the chin

Chorus

He has two enormous wattles hanging down
They're the best you'll ever find
Madam, you may stroke him if you like
If you feel that way inclined
Be careful he doesn't spit in your eye though

Chorus x 2

Has anybody seen, anybody seen
Anybody, anybody seen his cock

<the end>
