DVD Players
Hi again,
Can anyone tell me if DVD Players over in NZ are region free. Mine is on its last legs and wondering if it will be just as easy to purchase a new one over there when we arrive.

Get a blu ray player over in NZ, you'll save in the long run.

Re: DVD Players
DVD players aren't region free.
You have to hack it to become region free.
NZ is region 4.
What make and model is your dvd player?

Re: DVD Players
So far as DVD's are concerned
NZ is region 4
UK is region 2
That being said, we have NZ DVD's (labelled as Region 4) that will work in my UK player (which is not multi-region) and some that won't.
Some DVD's on sale here in NZ are multi-region... e.g. I just recently won the new Robin Hood DVD (Russell Crowe) in a quiz and that disc is region 2, 4 and (if I remember correctly) region 5 too.
But, as DVD's are now old-hat, if your player is on it's last legs, I wouldn't bother replacing it with another DVD player. Replace it with a Blu-Ray player instead (Blu-Ray discs can be, but in practice almost never are, region encoded and in any case, UK & NZ are the same 'region' - though it's not actually labelled as regions... but that's another story)... personally I'd be going for a PS3 for the Blu-Ray player and everything else it can do too... but I'd buy one in the UK as they're more expensive over here.

Re: DVD Players
Good point.
Though, are they still around?? I didn't think they (the discs) were being made anymore in which case that's even more of a reason to leave it behind. Bit of an ass if you already own a load of HD DVD discs though.

Many thanks for all the replies.
I had read somewhere that the dvd players in NZ are all multi region so thought I would check before deciding what to do.

Re: DVD Players
Our UK DVD player doesn't appear on the list of free hacking codes (probably too old!) so we just went to Harvey Norman and bought a cheap NZ one. The guy then sent us receipt in hand, to a local electrical shop which unlocked it for free, apparently they could claim the money back from Panasonic. You should be able to do the same.

Re: DVD Players
It's very rare to find one which isn't region free. However, by 'region free' what that may mean in practice is that you buy the DVD player and get an unlock code with it (rather than necessarily being unlocked already if that makes sense). If they aren't it's very very easy to simply get the unlock code. Stuffed if I can remember why but I think it's something to do with anticompetitive practices or something.
