Duck ! Mind the pelicans.
Just in case any hunters have difficulty telling a wild duck from a pelican................ 
from HERE
The Department of Conservation (DOC) is reminding all duck hunters that new residents on the Northern Wairoa River are not a game species and are protected under the Wildlife Act.
In August 2012 thirteen pelicans made New Zealand their home, settling on the banks of the Northern Wairoa River, near Dargaville. This migration is thought to be is thought to be a record for New Zealand.
“The pelicans appear to be doing well on the Northern Wairoa River, however this is the first duck hunting season they will be exposed to, so we want to remind hunters of their responsibility to all protected species, including the pelican,” says Darren Jones, Community Relations Ranger, Department of Conservation.
Resident pelican on the Northern Wairoa and Kaipara Harbour are protected under the Wildlife Act, as self introduced species are protected. If anyone is found to be deliberately killing / wounding protected species they will incur fines and or imprisonment.
For more information about hunting guidelines and regulations refer to the “Code of Conduct" in the Game Bird Hunting Guide, supplied with hunting licences. Duck hunting season opens Saturday 4 May 2013.

To be fair BEVS the problem with duck hunters is they'll shoot anything after a few beers. They aren't even safe from each other many seasons, doctors and nurses spend a fair part of the early season pulling lead shot out of things that turned out not to be a duck.

Rule 2: Always point firearms in a safe direction
Rule 3: Load a firearm only when ready to fire
Rule 4: Identify your target beyond all doubt
Rule 5: Check your firing zone
Rule 6: Store firearms and ammunition safely
Rule 7: Avoid alcohol and drugs when handling firearms
If that is the case, they should lose their Firearms Licences. When you sign the forms requesting a Firearms Licence, you agree to these rules. End of story.

Rule of New Zealand hunting:
If it moves use the shooty bang stick, then go and see what you've got.
Example. There is something about firearms that just attracts the trigger happy type.

Do you have a Firearms Licence yourself? Are you a hunter or shooter? Have you even taken the Firearms Safety Traing Course yourself? Do you personally know any hunters, or are you just generalising? Are you a member of any of the local shooting clubs? Do you have any first hand knowledge of any of these tragedies or are you just repeating what you saw / heard in the local rag?
No? So you're yet another armchair expert.

HHmm. We know plenty of hunters around here as there is plenty of hunting to be had and I have to say some of them can be just as 'flip'. Not sure if it's black humour or not or a rather gung-ho attitude that it will never happen to them.
In any case, I rapidly went off the idea of Mr BEVS going out after dark with any of them , even if they be seemingly safety conscious and sensible . Just too random for my liking although these incidents seem to happen more during the 'roar' it seems.
Anyway. Has anyone actually seen the pelicans please?
