Hi

I have a 14 year old lab and don't think that flying her back out what be a good idea - does anyone have any ideas about me and her coming out via sea?

Many thanks

Oddly, I have been investigating similar and having this discussion with assorted folk in the know.

Your 14yr old lab should be perfectly fine flying out provided she is perfectly fit and healthy.

There is likely a service for travel via sea but I would feel this to be prohibitively expensive

Many frieghters have a limited number of cabins for passengers, but I am not sure if they would allow you to take a dog. While such ships are going to be cheaper that prestigious cruise ships, they still aren't going to be cheap, so you'd being looking at a fairly tidy sum to pay for about a month's board and lodging to get from the UK to NZ.

That's the problem, she has had several strokes in the last year so we aren't prepared to risk flying her. Hence my looking at going by boat at sea level

Right then.

I am going to strongly suggest you have a conversation with Chris of Golden Arrow.

Chris, the owner of the business has been shipping pets for over 40 years going back to the days when the dogs and cats went by boat down to Australia and New Zealand. The rules and regulations change on a fairly regular basis and these changes certainly keep us on our toes! We specialise solely in the shipment of dogs, cats and other small pets to every part of the world. If you decide to take your pet with you when moving abroad, then you can rest assured that we know and understand all the intricacies of pet shipping, and are able to provide a service tailored to you and your pets' individual needs.
Come back to us with what he suggests for you both.

How long would it take by boat and what are the time intervals between ports? My concern would be if she had health problems on the journey over, there would be no chance of getting treatment quickly and it could be a long time until you get the chance to dock. Maybe take BEVS' advice and speak to someone with experience of shipping animals by plane and boat and see what they think
Good luck

We used Chris before in 2007 and will do so again for our other lab, I think having looked at this in more detail with timings etc and taking you good people's advice I think we may talk in detail to our vet and get his opinion on air travel. Many thanks guys

I'd imagine being on a boat for weeks more stressful for a dog than at 24 hr flight
