Default Do we bring our white goods?

Hi,
I've looked at a lot of posts on here about bringing belongings to NZ - and understand that the general approach is to bring everything.

Just wanted to ask about white goods - we are looking to rent, probably for at least 2 years while we get settled and have seen that many rental properties have white goods included.

Is it worth bringing things like our washing machine/dishwasher etc or will they just end up getting damp in transit?

Don't want to pay to ship items that aren't worth bringing?

Also, with regards to furniture itself - most of ours is only Ikea or second hand, its all nice - but again is it still worth paying to bring it?

Thanks

most rentals usually have just an oven and possibly a dish washer, unless they are furnished. so I would say bring them but as you will probably be here before the container turns up you can rent white goods and furniture through Mr Rental until the container arrives

Dishwashers are usually considered as part of chattels in a house, so generally stay when people move and not necessary to bring one EXCEPT if yours is a 'high end' (read expensive in NZ) European model like Miele, Bosch, AEG or such then I would say definitely bring it.

Same goes for washing machine; at best you'll get a Fisher and Paykel toploader in a rental. If you have a good model front loader then bring it, bring it, bring it. If you don't have a good one but would really, really, really like one, buy a new one and bring it.

Rentals usually don't have fridge/freezer included but should have cooker / or oven

Hell yes. Bring EVERYTHING furniture here is either very very heap or very very expensive! White good REAL expensive

Rentals aren't forced to have anything, and if they do you can always store if your garage / whatever.

Bring it ALL

Ok great - got it!

We'll bring it all - and possibly look at a new washing machine before we come.

Thanks everyone

I would recommend bringing a new washing machine that has an international warranty, e, g Bosch.

If you're buying new before you come, make sure it's a brand/model you can get here.

We brought over our Hotpoint washing machine, but when it went wrong it was very difficult to get anyone even to come and look at it as they don't sell them here, and when they did they couldn't get the part for it, so we had to buy a new machine.

There are plenty of front or top loaders for sale here. Check out prices before you buy. Noel Leeming, Harvey Norman, LV Martin and Farmers are shops that spring to mind. Remember, never pay the advertised price here, they'll always knock it down. Also, wait till the next weekend or public holiday and it'll be cheaper. Farmers often have sales on Thursdays.

Just checked, our Bosch machine is advertised about 50 pounds more than in the UK, so by the time we'd knocked them down, we paid the same.

I think MOSO makes a very good point. If youre going to bring things over, you have to make sure you can get parts for them here. Really, if you compare prices, there doesnt appear to be much difference, if anything, after exchange rate conversion anyway. You can also often get discounts for cash here because its never been cheaper for NZ retailers to import due to the high dollar. And then you also have to consider the cost of shipping. Although I guess there is a cost of selling used stuff there and buying new here.

we bought our stuff, the american style fridge freezer has needed a part and after a few emails and ignoring my husbands conversation that he had called Samsung and they won't help as they need to send out an engineer despite us knowing the part we need, I have managed to get the part ordered and am awaiting delivery from UK as I type.
If you buy new make sure you make it look like it has been used as you may get slapped with import tax if not.

I have to say I am the opposite, looking back I wish we had brought nothing. If we ever left NZ to move anywhere else I would only ever take personal stuff.

Not me, I am so wishing I bought more, even my cars. I sold a 2004 Citroen c3 with 40k miles on the clock for £1000. I am now looking for a cheap run around here, for $2000 I can get a 1994-1999 with over 180k on the clock and they are not that looked after, some even have wind up windows
Bring it, if you end up not needing it sell it on trade me

Totally agree with moonie, we sold our old Toyota for a pittance in the UK but regret it as it would have been worth around 4k over here if not more. Well worth the hassle of importing it.

Thanks everyone, really appreciate your advice.

Am now thinking of changing the car and shipping that over too! Can't afford a very expensive one, but it seems from looking at trade me that I''ll get a lot more for say 4k over her than when in nz.

Does anyone have any advice/experience of bringing their car? Is it very costly?

Makes me think a new business venture could be set up when we're over there importing cars....!

if you have owned the car less than 12 months you will get hit with import tax, also new goods if they do not look like they have been used can be hit with it as well. you have to weigh up the cost of that and buying in NZ.

bringing a car make sure you get it Professionally steamed clean inside and out, keep the receipt and I photographed the procedure and left ball in the car.

contact aa.co.nz and get the low down on your vehicle, they will require a few engine numbers to make sure it would pass the wof over here. be prepared for not having it once it has arrived for a week or so whilst they rip it apart and you have the privilege of paying for it. make sure you can get parts easily for the car.

Thanks Mrs F.
Did you bring your own car? You sound like you're talking from experience.

If so, would you go through the process again or is it more hassle than it's worth?

I've tried looking up the import tax on a vehicle but not getting anywhere - can anyone advise what they paid?

Thanks
