Default Divorce

Does anybody know if it is possible to instruct a solicitor in NZ to sort out a divorce where the other party is living in the UK?

It's not for me - just trying to help a friend and find out if anybody else has gone through it from this far away. Yes, I (and my friend) can google/call lawyer but I was looking for first hand experiences.
