You buy K's - either from the post office or on line. You get a card to put in the windscreen that says (for example) 10,000 to 20,000. and that's the tax on derv. Drive over the 20,000 and get caught and it's sell a kidney time. I'm sure someone will correct me but I think is a dollar a k over what you owe.

We have a Toyota surf 4x4, and we have to buy diesel miles, sort of road tax thing, also be careful of what you tow as well, because if you have not got right reg for that trailer weight then low and be hold, a kidney and a lung.

I know a guy who was over weight by 2 ton, all seats inside were filled with big blokes and a trailer with boat and gear on, his rego only said for about 1 ton, also he was out on Deisel miles, ouch, got pinged for heaps, and they also back dated it arrghh.

So I assume then the 10,000k you buy is the tax you pay, then you goto the petrol station and buy the diesel? So pay the tax before the fuel? so why dont they just put the tax onto the price of the diesel so all you have to do is fill up and pay it all in one hit?

cos there is no 'red' derv here and derv is used for lots of things - like heating, genies etc. So the duty isn't added at the pump.

Little story, Coming home from work one day with a mate in his ute and cars coming our way start flashing us. Mate looks a little worried. "What's up" I ask. "cops then to do a road block ahead, checking vehicles that sort of thing", "Oh", "Check my K's will you". I pull out his ticket and read off the numbers, At this point brakes slam on and R is selected, and a few rude words are said. A quick three point turn is made and we take a slight 120K detour home via metaled roads (Nice).

He sort of knew he was out on K's and was trying to save a few bob by not getting some!!!! Hence the panic and detour and he's the bloke who told me it's a dollar a k for every one over your ticket.

You lot all forgot to mention that the Vehicle Licencing cost (Road Tax) is also higher on a Diesel.

Hence why when my diesel wagon broke down it never got fixed!

Can anyone tell me if this tax just relates to diesel cars? Also what is the average road tax payable on both diesel and petrol cars?

Up to this point I was going to import my car with me, now I am wondering if it is worth it!

Petrol is taxed at the Pump (like in the UK) Diesel is not but saying that there is a differant Vehicle Licence Fee (Annual Road Tax) for Non Petrol vehicles thats higher than for Petrol Vehicles.

Petrol Car currently $211.84 (going up 1st July by $30 something)

Diesel Car currently $336.69 (again going up 1st July about the same amount)

Current Petrol Price average http://www.pricewatch.co.nz/ differance between 60-74c more expensive than diesel (depends on Fuel Grade eg 91 95 or 98)

I was hoping that someone would have some stats on whether in the end it is cheaper to drive a diesel. Where I come from in Canada, diesel is a cheaper fuel and there is not road user charge. You also travel farther on a liter of diesel. A diesel engined car sells at a premium and Volkswagon says you need to do 25,000 km per year to make up for the higher cost of the diesel engine in the car when buying new. But I can't make it out here, it seems that the idea is to make it the same for both fuel types even though the diesel car is more efficient, sort of a penalty system here I think.
