Default Dental health care?

I'm trying to find cover for dental care as it's unbelievably expensive here just so I can maintain yearly care. The only two quotes I found were full medical quotes with dental as a add on from southern cross and NIB and no more than 75% off for up to $500 a year is allowed to be covered for dental work which in this country would just about pay for a check up and a filling or two, Disgraceful. Is there any way I can just go for dental insurance alone without having to opt for full medical care? Does anyone else on here have dental insurance?

We don't have insurance, because all my research a few years ago showed what you've found. We shopped around for a dentist, and went with a small town, old fashioned practice that does a full check up with clean and polish plus x rays for $95.

If we need work, we've accepted that we'll have to pay, but hopefully it will cheaper than the flash High Street places.

My only advice is to ring around and ask how much they charge for a check up, and use that as a benchmark on pricing.

Not a lot in it cost wise unless you use NHS dental care (shudder). I had a filling done in UK about three years ago cost £130. An extraction here about 3 months ago cost $240.

If you can afford to it's a good idea to set up a small AP to set money aside for Drs visits and Dentist check ups.

I learned the hard way and had some BIG bills to pay to my dentists when I first moved here so I stack away a little money each week to them. If I go and I don't need anything done I get some cash to spend and if I do need something doing then most or all of it is already covered.

I also set one up for my GP, pay $10 every 2 weeks so now I can go when/if I need to and if my account is too high I just stop the AP.

thats a good idea, why did I not think of it , I have one set up for bills and kids schools costs so another one won't be to much of an issue, especially as youngest needs jaw alignment treatment and then possibly braces which seems to be about 10k all in.

I'm sure there are some dentists in Chch that will provide you with interest free finance if you can't afford the upfront cost. A couple of examples:

Lumino The Dentists - No Payments, No Interest For 18 Months

12-Months interest-free finance available for dental treatments

My husband needs a crown on one of his teeth. He's been quoted $1200 for the work from his dentist. This is over and above what our health insurance policy will cover for the whole year. So we will have to pay the cost of the remainder of what the insurance company won't pay for.

He is waiting for the new claim year to start, for us it's July, before he has the work done.

So, that will be the whole of the dental care insurance used up early in the claim year.
