Default Customs - prohibited items

Hi

We are at the point if getting a quotes for our container. One of the firms has said I should look at the customs NZ website as it says that toys are banned! This would be a disaster for us as we have three sons who would very much miss some of their toys once we get to NZ.

THIS IS WHAT IT SAYS-

Children’s nightwear, children’s toys, certain pistol crossbows, cots, candles containing lead in their wicks, candle wicks containing lead, baby walkers, and so on.
Children’s crayons, finger paints and water paints

Any advice or personal experience in this matter would be greatly received.

nope all our kids toys went. we didn't however have half empty paint pots, half used crayons etc in the house for them to pack as had already chucked them out. unopened packs of crayons and paints got packed no problem. think it's someone just being a bit over zealous with the reading of the do's and don'ts. If you want to use this firm I would personally call up the office and speak to another staff member and ask them their opinion, just tell them that you have read on the Immigration site about certain things and you want it clarified

Where is this supposed to be? It looks to be a mixture of sensible (cross-bows and lead) and the ridiculous....

Suffice to say we brought in enough toys to stock a well-sized toy shop and had nothing rejected...

Ah, found it - aimed at commercial importation, you will find personal effects are given exemption from many of the normal restrictions (the one about nuclear weapons stills applies though, even if a personal one )

You need to comply with this procedure: Import of Household Items, look at the declaration(s) in the docs on this page and be guided by that.
