My thinking is that if you don't declare and they find out, your nackked.
Own up, explain what and why, and most seem to be treated compassionately.
I had to get a character waiver after writing a letter explaining my history, part of which was dismissal from the army via the glasshouse for four months.
Trust their common sense.

CRB are useless BTW, my one conviction (careless driving) doesn't appear to have been recorded on anything but my driving license (interestingly it was written in pen on top of the existing license).
