Is it like the UK now that when making a purchase in a shop you cannot sign for it but have to put in your pin number?

When we were there in February/March never once were we asked to pin we always had to sign.

I use my pin number for my credit card here. Only been asked to sign where they have no facilities for entering the number!

When we were in NZ for 3 weeks in April, I was never asked to sign, it was always chip & pin!
Sorry, I know this answer is in total contrast to June's, but that's how we found it!

It is either/ or.

If you have a pin number for your NZ credit card, then you can enter the pin.

If you don't have a credit card pin number then you will sign.

If you have the pin number but forget it at the time , you can choose to sign.

The eftpos machine gives the choice at the time. It will state PIN or OK.
If you choose OK then you will sign.

"Chip and pin" as such does not exist here....
EFTPOS is the thing which relies on the magnetic strip.....not a SIM-type thingie.....and you can buy almost anything on it for any "low) amount in the strangest places.....

You can swing both ways, either enter the PIN or sign the docket. Some UK cards on some EFTPOS machines will only allow you to sign.

Most EFTPOS machines (and every outet has a different one - I think there's a bloke who knocks different models off for fun.....) offer the question "PIN/OK/Sign?" (perm one from the last two) at the end, just take the one you want and hey-presto "Transaction Accpeted" or "Accpted"......

Yep you can still sign for it.

Most people I know have a pin number for their credit card and have done for years. I do know that in machines which didn't have the capacity to take pin numbers on credit cards (old style ones - kmart used to have these up until the last year i think) then I could sign it. But I dont recall ever being able to sign for my card when the capacity to enter the pin number existed.

I do know, however, that I have both signed and used the pin number on my UK chip credit card whilst in New Zealand.

I dunno, i have had an eftpos card since i was 11 or 12. Credit card for the last ten. I can't recall chosing to sign for something where thecapacity to put a pin number in existed - it just seemed a bit odd for me

In my case it is laziness. To get a pin for the CC , I need to travel into the bank in town, or so I was told.

yeah, I keep forgetting the pin.....

never mind the security question.....

and the telephone/online banking passwords......

and all the rest......grrr.......conveniet but a pain in the neck......owch....it hurts

Feel the same way...love computers/surfing the net...hate the passwords/mother's maiden name stuff/pin numbers......to the extent that I haven't bothered to renew cashcards on my UK Bank Accounts (I can't possibly remember all these PINs)....in NZ so far I have always had to pin for EFTPOS and on the rare occasion I have used a creditcard (UK or EU or NZ one ) it has always been sign for it, although last week, I was given the PIN option for the first time. Car park machines sometimes accept creditcards with neither use of PIN nor signature.

Glad I'm not the only one confounded by all the different EFTPOS machine styles..swipe the card wrongly so often as a result. Getting the choice of account to debit by pressing button was new to me too but maybe UK has that too now, I don't know.

its the same in the uk i find, every place you go to has different machines so i always put them in wrong its a pita... i went to the banks and changed all my pin numbers so that they are all the same as i always forgot them now its easy...
