Default Could New Zealand grow to a population of 100 million one day?

By land area Japan has roughly 33% more land than New Zealand. And given that Japan has 127 million people, that means New Zealand is not a small place either. Can you guys see the country one day having a population of 100 million or more?

here's an idea, all those moving to Auckland could have another levy imposed on them to help pay for the Sky Conference centre

Short answer is no. Leave us in Auckland alone will you. We don't want the Sky Conference Centre or Len's train set either.

Can't see it myself, especially on the South Island. One can only expand so much when there are whacking great mountains, lakes and national parks everywhere! Just the way I like it

I think one for sure..
but not for hundreds of years yet.
I think 10 million people will happen in our lifetime. I'd say, probably in the next 50 years, NZ will have a population of 10 million, then the next 50 years will see it reach 25 million so within 100 years we will see NZ at 25-30 million people, which will REALLY change the country economically and socially , the immigrants who will be coming will be south east asians, arabs, africans, and islanders, as the world gets more and more populated and the refugees leaving their lands looking for a new life, wont be long before the whole world has changed, like the UK now, its such a multicultural society it's hard to even see white people in london now.
new zealand has so much land, eventually big business, politicians will sell it all off for themselves, and their future kin, and they will need immigrants to slave off of, so more and more people will be coming in, and small towns will grow and construction will boom for 100 years.. my prediction a country like NZ will have 50 million people in the next 200 years, and that will make it a country like thailand! in terms of over population..
I would hate to live in the new, new zealand in the future.. but eventually NZ will sell out! it has done already for the past 20 years.. so it's already opened that box, no going back.. national and labour will destroy the country!

Smile Re: Could New Zealand grow to a population of 100 million one day?

The birthrates in most developed countries have been falling for years and many are now under the replacement rate, the only way our population grows in the future is net migration. In the 70's global population growth was over 2% per year, the rate is just over over 1% currently. UN forecasts suggest by 2055 the population will peak and decline thereafter.

Even if New Zealand continues to be an attractive place to live I doubt net migration will boost the population far beyond that point.

Looks like theyre projecting the population to be about 6-6.5 million in 2061, so I certainly wont be around to see it.

In the United States demographics project a minority majority by 2050, chief reasons being the rapid immigration of Hispanics and the relatively low birth rate of the other ethnic groups. Unless unfortunate circumstances hit me, I'll be alive to see it, and it will be incredible to see how society changes with such a major demographic shift.

It sounds like New Zealand may have the same shift with Asians overtaking Europeans.

This is mainly a British expat board – can anyone tell me how they felt London has changed -- both for the better and worse -- as whites have become a minority? It seems the century we are in will see an expansion of this trend, and I'm very curious to get a sense of what will happen.

In America historically the definition of "white" has expanded, and I've heard it said that Hispanics may eventually be considered white.

I am from the Los Angeles area. I can speak only from anecdotes – it seems Asians live in the nicest areas of town, Hispanics are in working-class areas, and predominantly black areas are considered dangerous. There are exceptions: Washington DC has a sizable black population and they are upper middle income.
