Default Costs of running a car!

Hi,

I was wondering if somebody could give me a rough breakdown of the costs to run a car in NZ please? eg. insurance, petrol, road tax, WOF etc. etc!

I just would like to know how it compares with the UK

Many thanks

Petrol and insurance depends on what vehicle you get. So difficult to answer.
I run a honda Jazz, does 100km per 7.8l of fuel. Insurance is approx $400 fully comp.

W.O.F is $40-$50 every 6 months for cars over 3 years of age (yealy for new cars). Rego for a fuel car is $289 per year. For a diesel vehicel this is more as diesel fuel is cheaper.

Servicing is approx $200 per basic service.

Car: '93 Honda Accord
Insurance: $450ish
Maintenance/Tyres: $600
MOT/Road tax: $340 IRRC (Thieving cnuts)
Petrol:$2/litre (ish)

Running a car is very cheap, can pick up something reliable for under $5k. Happy motoring .

Thanks Newfies and Charismatic! It does sound cheaper than the UK which is great news.

Just out of interest, what do they have in NZ in the way of 7 seater people carriers? We have a Vauxhall Zafira in the UK which comes in very handy with 3 young children, do they have something of a similar model... would be ideal for doing the airport run to pick up the grandparents!

We picked up a 94 Nissan Mistral 4x4 for under $5k. Very clean and tidy (a rarity in New Zealand!) Has 7 seats and goes anywhere. Bullet proof as well, so running costs are low.

Hi there, I picked a Zafira up here (badged as an Opal Zafira, there are Vauxhalls here but not many, they are usually badged as Opal or Holden) full leather, aircon etc etc year 2000 - been good as gold for me, cost me $6000, I saw it on trademe when I was still in the UK and went to see it when I landed - insurance is $500 fully comp for me and the mrs - Motoring is far cheaper hear than in the UK :-) - for example theres a 7 seater Mitsubishi at being sold privately at the bottom of my street for $4950 so there are plenty about

Default Re: Costs of running a car!

2004 Skoda Octavia vRS combi. 1.8 turbo
Insurance $47/month (agreed value policy, 12 years no claims, car garaged at night)
Petrol about $90 for a 50l tank of 98RON
Tyres about $300 each (18" wheels )
Oil change service $200 or $100 to do it yourself with decent synthetic oil.
Rego $230
WOF every 12 months until now - $30-40
Cambelt service (every 4 years on my car) $1500

Being a Skoda - with Audi/VW parts everything comes from Europe or the US.

Buying parts in NZ shops you'll pay 200-250% on UK prices. Importing them yourself you usually pay nearly the same in postage as the part costs but get stuff much cheaper than ripoff NZ local prices!
If you want cheap running buy a Japanese snoozemobile.

Yeah I'm not looking forward to them needing replacing. Last time I bought 4 tyres and the wheels at once - good tyres though, Dunlop Direzzas.

Assuming the world hasn't ended of course.
