Cost of going to OZ

Just a quick one.
I'm not thinking of going but...
If you have NZ citizenship what visas from Australian immigration do you need
and what costs are involved in getting them to allow you to work permanently in OZ

AFAIK, as long as you have a NZ passport, you can walk right in and start working with no extra visa required. However, your status is that of a temporary resident so can't get various benefits.

How would you be able to get oz residency or citenzhip out of interest?

You have to apply in the normal way, like we had to for NZ. Have a look at their immigration department website: http://www.immi.gov.au/

Yep, your NZ citizenship (passport) gets you right of entry and abode and to work in Oz (provided you meet the character declaration at the border) BUT a NZ passport provides no route whatsoever to Australian PR or citizenship. To get that you'd have to go down the normal visa routes. The advantage of having NZ passport is that you can get into the country, get working and be more likely to be able to get a skilled visa based on already being in the workforce. Some older and less skilled Kiwis will never get Australian PR, unlike my mother Australian mother* who gets granted NZ PR at the border every time she comes to visit me!

*Not that she's old and unskilled- she's neither- just that she doesn't need to be anything other than an Australian (or even just an Australian PR holder!!!) to get NZ PR. No fair.

Yup i had a look at this out of curiosity a while ago after reading online about what benefits you get (or lack thereof) as an NZ Citizen living in Oz. What bourbon-biscuit has said is right - you get to go in and work - and that's about it. there are no other benefit entitlements you get as a NZ citizen. If you want to become an Oz citizen you still have to get a skilled job - but is more likely if you are able to work there already.

Re: Cost of going to OZ

Thanks everyone,
I was confused as my ex mentioned going to work in OZ but then said it would cost
her around $8k to do so, she's a uni lecturer and would be eligable for NZ citizenship in 6 months
She said her friend works for OZ immigration but being an ex she wouldn't believe a word of my
explanation that the costs she's been quoted are bollocks.
Oh well you try to help some people and all you get is grief !!
