Default Cost of flight back to UK

A friend of ours is coming to visit next March

Shes flying Singapore Airlines London to Auckland via Singapore and her ticket is costing £885 return

Out of interest I went to the same UK website that she booked on and asked for a price Auckland to London via Singapore and return and was quoted £1225 ... 38% more Same dates, just in a different direction !!!!!!:curse:

Can anyone offer an explaination for this or are we just being ripped off 'cos we live at the edge of the world??

You have to take account of the peak times this side of the world, it may be a busier time compared to the other way and the actual times of the flight. It may be a popular flight into or out of Singapore too, not just the departure and arrival points to consider. Also a lot depends on how full the planes are, the allocation of cheapest seats for one leg (or even both) may already have gone. I don't think you can compare like with like, when there are so many variables.

If you look at any flight, even domestic, the prices will vary drastically according to the time of day of the flight. Flights that coincide with key business traveller times, such as those arriving early morning or departing early evening are always the most expensive.

You also need to be aware that even looking at one airline their prices can vary dramitically within a couple of hours: We went back to the UK for a couple of weeks at the start of July and when I was booking the tickets Emirates flights (via their web-site) varied from $7200 to $3600 to $7400 within a couple of hours. At the same time I was checking with Singapore who went $3600, $3400, $3200.....at which point I lost my nerve and booked at that price.

That was for Welly to Manchester - anything to avoid Heathrow!

Its a mine field. I have booked via Singapore Airlines going Manchester to Auckland if I had been going Auckland - Manchester it would have been £350 cheaper. I look on their site every week and the flights have gone up £63 since I booked and will probably go up more by the time we go. We leave on the 22nd Dec returning 2nd Feb so that makes it dearer as well because we are going for Christmas.
