In the uk the number of deaths in October, for any reason, is exactly in line with where it should be based on a 5 year average, and this is including covid deaths. It is no more a threat to life than other viruses or diseases.
This isn't going to go away, it will be like the flu, we will get our annual jabs and carry on.
Yes open up why don't you! .. The UK did that and now they're almost back to square one!
Its out of control again! There were more than 350 deaths from covid-19 yesterday and hospitals are filling up rapidly!

There have been 1,172,075 deaths worldwide so far and this is a long way from being over!

Its under control in NZ .. Keep it that way! .. Its deadly!

If 30000 people a day we're catching the flu what would the death rate be. I'd hazzard a guess at a lot higher than we are seeing for covid now the treatments have improved

The daily cases in UK and Europe are now twice what they were in the first wave and undoubtedly with the onset of Winter it's not going away any time soon and their hospitals will be absolutely swamped. I never thought the day would come when I feel grateful to be here instead of there but that has all changed this year and I feel pretty sure that neither our economy or our overall wellbeing and mental health is suffering any more than theirs. I do however feel sick to my stomach everyday thinking of what our families are going through over there.

There's your problem! ... You are just guessing! Try doing some research!

The fatality rate for covid-19 is at least 5 X that of seasonal flu!

I honestly had your attitude towards covid till just over 2 weeks ago.
My mum and dad have been ill for two weeks can't get out there bed.
My uncle is the same sick can't breath for 2 weeks.
My grandad is up the hospital alone in a ward sick and no one can visit him as he has covid.
my gran and grandad are in isolation and my mum and dad.
Everything is all good when your chilling on mission bay covid free. till it happens to your own life and family. Then it all changes belive me.

Government to open Australia travel bubble apparently.

Makes sense, the isolation facilities are already almost at full capacity with flights being pulled as people start to return for Christmas. Also good to see people will get their money back from Air New Zealand after that commerce commission ruling, they where completely out of order to hold funds for cancelled flights when no reasonable alternative service was available.

We'll see, the capacity constraints on the existing system will always be an issue at periods of peak demand, like the next few months. I expect the government play their cards pretty close to their chest as a matter of political expediency which is unfortunate for people trying to cling onto their jobs in airlines and tourism as, even whe opened, it will likely mean fewer people booking.

True that. I've applied for an border permit exemption thingy, (NZ resident more than 6 ,months, essential worker as well now) , will look into coming over in January, see when I can get a flight. The bubble might be open but will apply for a hotel voucher anyway. I'm staying here to have xmas with the offspring anyway. I'd like to avoid an Aussie summer to be honest.

Essential worker. I've never felt essential for anything ever!

Deaths per capita are picking up again heading into winter. A good anology for the risk level is car crashes I think, for a long time the risk in most European countries was lower than car crashes.

If you look at New Zealand road deaths there are about 2.2 deaths per million people per week but the UK has experienced 36 deaths per million per week last week. Even what you would consider a well run response like Germany is at about 8 per million per week.

Just a mention of Long Covid in the UK.
Guardian article on Long Covid
The figure they quote of 10% affected is very worrying, and highlights the fact that it isn't just a choice of living or dying but of recovery to full fitness after an infection.
