There doesn't appear to have been any relief and the Italians are about 3 weeks into this. Even if it does work for us we can hardly ask nor afford for people to spend more time in quarantine this year.

Unfortunately my realisation is that the South Korean model, that favours extensive testing over isolation, is the only viable strategy to manage public health over the long term. We should not wait to build the labs and manufacture the tests.

from what I have been seeing from the media, regarding Italy, is that a lot of the infection has come from the hospital environments themselves. Seems that they also have had to send hundreds of infected people to other hospitals and I believe to other countries as well.

The idea is to save as many lifes as possible. Not let it get completly out of control.
I reckon we could be in and out of level 4 a lot over the next year.
Your not going to completly eliminate it for good. it will build up again then need another lockdown, either that or let it run for longer which I don't think they want todo cause of the health care system here.
I'm quite intrested to know what they are going to do with the border. They need to open it at some point for visitors. Imagine what all the places would be like for a year or more with no tourism.

Mate just tested positive for Covid-19 today.
He was in Queenstown for a fortnight on business when that small cluster broke out recently and even though he was as rough as a dog a few days after getting home the Community Based Assessment Clinic here in Tauranga refused to test him (even though his GP had referred him) as he apparently didn't meet the criteria WTF!!! ?
He's been really bad flu for a week at home, with his wife going to work as she's an essential employee working in a GP practice on reception WTF!!! ?
Anyways, he rang his Mrs at work one day last week saying he felt really sick and one of the doctors gave her a pulse oximiter thingy to take home and test his blood oxygen levels and they were 87% which is seriously bad for a late 30's bloke who's reasonably fit. Should be like >98%. Doctor rang the hospital, got him admitted immediately and he's been in there 3 or 4 days and had to have oxygen for the first 24hrs before his blood oxygen levels got up. He was tested for Covid-19 and got the positive result today, a few hours after they'd already sent him home WTF!!! ?

There is absolutely no hope. The country will be at Level 5 with Army assistance before the week is out!!!

In an ideal world anyone wanting the test will be given it but only certain criteria results in a test so you're buddy wouldn't have hit all the necessary stages to warrant a test. Limited by labs, lab workers and the gear needed in extracting the results. Sounds shit don't it but it is what it is unfortunately. That finger prick test used by NHS staff now could be a game changer though, hopefully that gets rolled out internationally soon as.
And we're already at level 4 out of 4 with army assistance!

I don't get what criteria you would need.

Na, it's mega limited. Something like specific Covid symptoms plus close contact with a positive existing case, same as UK. But being in a hospital is different so you'd hope they'd spot something pretty damn wrong but as like the lady who died, but they didn't. I think it's why we gone lockdown so early, resources are so limited it could easily be worse than europe's worst

That's so vague. how do you know if you been in contact with positive. There is escapes mate wife been working in GP surgery for well over a week with it. how many people has she come in contact with in that time.
It don't kniw what they going do here after these 4 weeks.
They went into lock down after 50 cases. Which is the best thing todo to save lives. but been realistic it can't stay in lockdown till a vaccine is available.
Its not going stop spreading. it will just flare up again.
I don't know what they going do with the borders either. no point closing it for 8 weeks then opening it back up again.

As the WHO said "Our key message is test, test, test." I don't know how much clearer that message could have been. You just don't know and can't do meaningful planning unless you test. Yet here we are still turning sick people away because they don't tick all the boxes, despite knowing that the virus can often present as a cold or even asymptomatic.

We have to test or we are just guessing.

We had one of the early suspected cases at work so the contact tracing team got involved to investigate. Ministry of Health advised us that...
people need to have been in close contact (face to face and closer than 2 metres for 15 mins or more, AND had physical contact (which includes being coughed and sneezed on) or in a room for 2hrs or longer with an infected person

Thankfully the Italian rate of increase seems to be easing off just a little. We shall see.
I agree that test, test, test is the way to go, but first you need enough test kits.
Until they come through (but when?) all you can do is treat everyone as if the have Covid-19 and keep them all apart.
Once there are enough antibody tests the majority of the population can be screened.
Until then we are just fighting in the dark.

UK Government is not shining at the moment on getting people tested.
Roll on the finger prick test kits!

this guy makes a good point up until he says "I didn't expect to test positive." Here lies the problem, everyone wants a test and not enough tests

I see loads negative comments about the UK and Europe and USA on Facebook regarding the virus.
Its alot harder to contain in places like London and NY.
