Conkers

A bit of a daft question...

My family is in that horrible limbo period, waiting to be assigned a case officer after submitting our ITA about 5weeks ago, house is on the market, looking for a job etc.

Anway, yesterday, we all went for a walk by Hambledon lock near Henley and
found a conker tree that had the most enormous conkers I've ever seen. We
spent a great afternoon teaching the kids (2 and 4) all about conkers and
conker fights.

So, does NZ have any conker trees? Horse chestnuts not sweet chestnuts.

cheers

Bob

I don't know.

But wanted to reply since we have been doing the same thing with both our girls as we go past a fantastic chestnut tree on the way to school/pre-school every morning. Have a wonderful collection in a huge bowl taking pride of place on the sideboard in the living room. Have wondered the same thing about NZ. Just asked (kiwi) hubbie, he's not sure - can't remember. I doubt it, but just a guess.

Has brought back great memories. :)

I hope they've got Sweet chestnuts, I've been banking on this as most homes have log burners :)

Conkers would be great too, my 3 have been having great fun with them this year.

It looks promising for Sweet Chestnuts...if the existence of the "New Zealand Chestnut Council :) isn't a joke!! http://www.nzcc.org.nz/

Are we still allowed to play conkers in the UK? I thought it had been banned!!

I knew it -

Now the nut allergy I can sort of understand, but to sue someone for a conker injury! FFS!!

certainly loads in the parks in hawkes bay and the local kids don't seem to play conkers, so they tend to just rot under the trees unless an expat family finds them first.

Hi Bob, Yeah heaps of conker trees, oaks, pines, also similar birdlife i.e. sparrows, chaffinches etc. It's really similar in a lot of respects - espec. at the moment the weather!!!!!!!!!

We gathered pocket fulls of freshly fallen sweet chestnuts in Christchurch. Nothing like free stuff in NZ and we roasted them on our wood burner ... delicious!
Conkers are also here but the kiwi kids aren't so bothered about them
