Question Commuting from the Kapiti Coast to Welly CBD

Is this easy enough via public transport? I really don't want to drive into the CBD. No way no how! Parking's too expensive, and when I worked in Chicago's CBD, taking the train was far easier than attempting to drive.

Is there a bus route or do people generally take the train? How long does it take? Thanks for any help peeps.

Not sure about train links, but Welly CBD not that bad. You can easily park on outskirts eg Wadestown for free and either stroll in (about 20 min) or catch regular bus service. I used to love walking in from Wadestown.

Thanks for that, very useful. We're only looking to have one car, though...

Someone I work with takes the train from Paraparaumu - takes about an hour. She's recently been taking the bus instead and seems to think that's okay too.
Wadestown to town's a bit of a walk!
But I park in Thorndon (and pay $80 a month) and walk thorugh the botanic gardens, which is also a bit of a hike (141 steps and two big hills)

After three months I can jog up the steps in one go and not feel as if I'm about to die. So fitter than I was!

Better than paying $12 a day to park on the Terrace.

If you are living on the Kapiti coast, then by far the best way would be train as it does only take about an hour. The one benefit of the train is that because it is along the main trunk line when there are repairs that need to be made, they are done pretty quickly. Well, quick is relative. But perhaps more promptly than on other lines

http://www.metlink.org.nz and check either the Paraparaumu Line (which is the regular electric commuter line) or the Capital Connection which is the train between Palmerston North and Wellington.

I certainly would not want to be stuck in traffic from the Kapiti Coast to Wellington! As a compromise and depending where you are actually living on the Coast, perhaps you could drive to one of the train stations further along the line. Not sure you would actually achieve anything though.

Most people I know who work in Wellington and live on the Coast arrive by train. When I worked in Lower Hutt, interestingly enough many people could just drive over either the Paekakariki Hill or the Haywards Hills. But for working in town, definitely train.

Actually, I didn’t realise there was a bus. Could try that out as well.

Bloody hell! That is quite the walk! Must be "fun" in winter when it's really cold out, lashing down with rain with that lovely antarctic wind.

I'll say! Doesn't take long, and those hills are wonderful for legs! When Phil passed out from exhaustion one afternoon when we were staying at Central City Apartments, Lauren and I went for a walk through the CBD and hopped on the cable car up to the gardens. Of course she ran down the hill on the other side shouting "wheeeeeeeeeeeeeeee!!!!!" all the way!

Then we had to climb back up...

Thank you so much for that link and the info, it's very useful! I always take public transport wherever possible.

Probably not... but we're probably going to rent for 6 or so months (time to let the prices plummet?) and research a ton during that time. That will be mostly Phil's job!

Two cars isn't that difficult. I've walked from Newtown to Westpac in a little over 40 mins-it's an easy city to walk round-but I agree, reckon train is best.
