Commuting in Auckland (places about an hour away from the centre)
With regards to commuting in Auckland I don't mind travelling in if it helps keep down house purchase price. Can anyone tell me those areas that are, in travel time at least, about 1 to 1.5 hours from the city centre?

It all depends on the role you're looking for etc I guess and what others factors you may have i.e. near the sea, schools etc. For example you could look at Gulf Harbour and use a ferry to get to the CBD, that way house prices would be less, if sea isn't a factor then you could look at Waimauku in the West or Hunua in the South, both rural and probably would need an early start to beat the traffic. Not sure if that helps but happy to help if you wanted to PM me etc.,

beach haven or birkenhead are still reasonably priced and both have a ferry service to the city

Places north or west of Orewa? There are some gem rural properties if that floats your boat. Talking about Waiwera Valley Rd (?) and the back blocks through to Puhoi and Kaukapakapa.
Or, and I keep saying this, despite the recent run of murders - the area down Don Buck Rd right through to Lincoln Rd. Some decent primary schools there - not so sure about senior schooling though.
I still like West Harbour as well, despite its new popularity, and even the Massey area round the Rugby club.
Lots of options - just need to think outside the standard box. Which, to be fair, isn't everyone's forté.

If you'd said 1/2 hour from the city centre, you'd defo be limiting the number of places, but 1 1/2 hrs opens it up considerably more, but do you really want to spend 3 hours a day in the car, bus, boat or train (there's limited of the latter!)?

IF I could hack 1.5 hours each way of commuting I would choose Warkworth but that's not ever going to happen as I really wouldn't like to tempt fate and be responsible for any kind of Groundhog Day shooting incident on the way to the office.

Hi Mrs F.
Not yet, but I am busily checking that we can actually afford Auckland.
Wellington and its surrounding areas offer more value for money on the whole, but there are more jobs on offer in my field (C#.Net development) in Auckland than in Wellington.

Travelling from Henderson into the City takes about an hour, the train takes 50 odd minutes and it can take 40 minutes alone to get on the motorway and another 30 minute crawl on the Northwestern Motorway.
But be advised, don't consider living in Henderson, it's sh1te and there's been loads of murders out that way recently. Plus it's not even far from central Auckland.

Re: Commuting in Auckland (places about an hour away from the centre)
We have lived in Gulf Harbour for nearly 8 years now. OH gets the ferry to the CBD every day at the mo. The ferry timetable has changed recently so that there are 3 ferries to the city (though one is useless for workers but good for shopping in the city) and 3 back to GH. Takes OH approx 3 mins to drive to ferry car park, 50 mins on the ferry & then a 10 min walk to his office.

Hope this helps.
