Talking a food - someone in NZ should open an Indian thats tastes like a UK Indian - not the gravy with curry powder efforts i had the misfortune to sample.

Never had Indian here but the Thai and Malay food is fantastic.

I still can't find a chippy that uses fresh potatoes (rather than frozen) and gives you lashings of vinegar, but their fish is usually delicious. ;)

My turn to moan about something UK now then..............

People that bitch & moan about how English Curries are the be all end all etc......there are decent Indian Restaurants in NZ but that might be up to scratch to an English person because English Curries arent like traditional Indian curries so that would still give one something to moan about:mad:

Not too sure about that. In the course of my work I used to visit quite a lot of restaurants in the UK run by recent immigrants from India. From what I saw their recipes and ingredients were pretty authentic and they prided themselves on making food in the traditional ways. They used to feed their own families on what they cooked so it must've been good.

Cant comment on the frozen vs fresh potatoes but can say the vinegar thing is definately a British thing........more common for Kiwis to want to put tomato sauce on their fish & chips:o Personally I prefer lemon juice on my fish & yes I do like vinegar on my chips too & always found it simple to do so at home:) If my memory serves me right years ago you could get vinegar at the chippy but then they started selling it in little sachets but not too sure if they still do that anywhere in NZ today:confused:

Both our local fush and chup shops serve with vinegar if asked.

On the subject of Indian restaurants - I have had as good as, if not better, Indian food in NZ as in the UK.

Not happy with chinese smorgasbord though - where did that idea come from?

Load of rubbish!

My Indian friend cooked lots for us and we had authentic Indian food which was just divine, the New Zealand Curry's are just a lot sweeter and blander in comparison.
Kiwis just don't do spice unless it's chilli and sweetened lol.

In the UK it's free. Admittedly it will probably be watered down shite :rolleyes: but it's there for you if you want it.

Oh....there's nothing quite like a chunky slab of snapper steaming hot in a light crispy batter and a good squeeze of fresh lemon (lemon just picked from the garden even) my fave takeaway of all time. Best takeout in NZ it is. :D

There are some pretty good takeaway roast dinner places round here too, used to eat quite a lot of these when we first arrived in the winter and living in a motel. Great stuff it were and they give you loadsa meat.

I won't go into the donner kebabs thing, it's far too disappointing.

Have you tried the INdians in Te Puke??? Bloody briliant (but pricey) plus across the road is a Indian supermarket. It is cheap as chips!!

My one and only moan about the UK.

Out and about today only to find a blizzard coming down from teh North. Roads are a nightmare, not just because of teh snow but bloody idiots that panic, slam on the brakes then get stuck going up a hill. I have a beaten up Corsa and had no worries with the roads but these idiots in their fancy cars just cant drive.

So thats me stuck in tonight when I should have been out in Glasgow with my mates!!

ps cant even get an Indian takeway

Cant say I it was ever a problem for me as I dont use salt on anything not even on my chips & people thought I was weird:D My son found a lot of food in the UK bland & I find a lot of food here in the US bland & my friends who have visited NZ think the food there is bland so it all comes down to what we are used too doesnt it!! While I have to agree with you re the sugar content in NZ the easy way to solve that is to try & make things at home from scratch & yes I know a lot of people dont have time to do that but if its a real problem then its time well spent isnt it?? The other thing re the curry thing it seems to be a staple part of the UK diet where it is low on the list of most kiwis. Yes we do like curries but not to the extent that you Brits do. I know your in the CHCH area so might suggest you try to go to The Little House Of India in Merivale when you can, the Indian meals there are excellent in my opinion & would genuinely like to know how you rate it.:)
