cold last night?

Birrrr:ohmy:

Was it cold last night or what!

We've a cow about to drop her calf, so I got up a bit earlier this morning (4am), just to check her over. Putting my wellies on, (I refuse to call them gumboots), they felt like they were made of steel, not rubber, so stiff they were, and my dog didn't exactly leap from her bed to come with me....I should have worked it out by then it was cold.

But bloody hell it's freezing:eek:

Walking over the fields the ground was rock hard and the grass crunched underfoot. No calf:thumbdown: so walk back home and NO water:thumbdown::eek:

We've been here 5 years and the water has frozen just twice before, and never in May! Go check my weather station to see how cold it is and even that's dead!

Looking out the window now the sun's up and it might as well be snow, it's that white:eek: No idea of how cold it got, but I hope this isn't a portent for winter.

Anyone else frozen?

It's been somewhat chilly the past couple of nights. We've already seen early morning frost on our wee section.

Love those crispy mornings , makes me laugh you lot are on the NI we are way down south , Double glazing and HRV to keep the windows from crying , awesome , plenty of firewood, thats one thing we tell all in UK who want to move here , always have $$$$ for heating, being cold in NZ houses is way different than UK ones !!! If we never have enough $$ to keep warm in winter , i think we would move to OZ just for the weather :frown: and more free heat .

Apart from that Harden UP !!!!!!:frown:

Harden up indeed!! Perhaps we should have a thread along the lines of: 'How much have you spent so far on trying to keep your Kiwi shed warm?'

Level 1: Gosh it's so warm you bunch of softies, harden up I'm a kiwi now.

Level 2: Crikey, it a bit nippy and damp innit, better get meself down to Wharehouse for a dehumidifier and an electric blanket.

Level 3: Oil filled electric radiators are cheap as chips, aren't they?

Level 4: This radiator is a bit crap, lets get some Expol underfloor insulation.

Level 5: I heard them panel heaters are the way to go, you can leave them on all day. Oopsie, didn't think about the leccie bill!!

Level 6: No don't muck about with heating you really don't need it in the sub-tropics, get that HRV, it is the business and meant to do the trick.

Level 7: Lets look at a heat pump, they only cost $7k what the hell, we'll save that on electricity.

Level 8: Perhaps some more roof and wall insulation might help keep the heat in.

Level 9: Hey lets call get some quotes for double glazing, I hear it's all the rage in NZ now.

Level 10: Bugger it, lets just get central heating!

I think Mr Fooferfish you must be at Level 10 in this game by now.

Oh really. That is just not nice or called for. Ugh!

You have chosen to 'harden up' by spending a good deal of money you don't have - debt/mortgage - to do that. Many simply can't afford to do that.

I know of people burning pallets to keep warm. Tell them to harden up. They can't afford to borrow to gain alternatives.

I can remember working out on building sites back home, when it would be so cold your finger tips would split open:eek: yet it never seemed as cold as it is here, although it was actually colder.

Perhaps it's because it does get warmed during the day, but being cold in NZ certainly seems to be 'colder' than being cold in the UK

does that make sense:blink:

After 10 years I actually don't feel the cold like I used to when I first arrived.....But we did go through the "Stages" mentioned above. Now we have a heat pump and its great! Although we will be moving to a house with no heat pump just a log burner so not looking forward to the chilly mornings and then coming home to light the fire :-(

We have a house with no heating in any shape or form and a window that won't shut in our bedroom (which is full of windows). The joy of renting......reminds me of Scotland

It'll all be over by mid August then.
