Default civil servants/Govt employees?

Hi all,

Just wondering if there are any of you out there employed by the Government in NZ and whether they helped foot the cost of you moving to NZ for that job?

Thanks

Not strictly a civil servant but I do work for a State Owned Enterprise in NZ, which is a company owned by the government and we have to justify all spending etc to the general public.

Yes thay contributed towards the cost of moving here. Not all of it but we got $10k for shipping, $5k for temporary accommodation, a hire car for 2 weeks and they insured our whole shipping container for free.

You must ask though when negotiating your contract.

Yes, I work for the government. They paid all relocation costs including ticket for the dog which was more expensive than for the rest of us combined! We did need to top up the freight because we have so much stuff (although we woule need our own ship now)

Sounds the same as the UK's historic control of public money..

My hubby works for a government agency and they paid him $1500 as a resettlement cost. It may depend on whether they find/want you. We applied for an advertised job and got it.

Looks like it's luck of the draw.... sorry. Not heard anything this end yet. I had a quick peak at your blog and saw it's by your son (with a little help??) We have an 8 yr old son and 11 yr old daughter... I think they will find it very interesting...it's always good to know how the children feel. Mine are keen to go to NZ but I am sure there will be tears when/if we leave! Forever waiting it seems.

Look at it this way. My NZ employer needed someone with my skills and experience. They can either recruit a graduate, then eight to ten years, and a couple of million dollars later, they will have someone who is getting close. Or, they can put an attractive package together and hope to directly recruit someone from overseas who can step straight into the post. I took (at the then exchange rate) a 40% pay drop to relocate to NZ, so the package was actually only just good enough. If you think a few thousand bucks to move me, my family, chattels and dog is worse value than a couple of million dollars and a ten year wait, then I have a bridge that you may want to buy

That's exactly what it is. Some people get a job offer and have all if not some of their relocation expenses paid right down to moving their cat or dog, plus accommodation on arrival plus a car to use etc.

Nice work if you can get it and I genuinely say well done and good luck.

We turned up in NZ with no job to go to and we paid all our own relocation costs. Although when we moved to Wanganui we did get a sum of money from my husband's new boss to be used for relocation expenses. My husband submitted the receipts for things to the value of the set amount.

It cost another two and a half thousand dollars on top of that but we were very grateful for what we got.

We did a reccy to Wanganui prior to moving so we could house hunt some accommodation. The flights and accommodation for that was paid from the relocation budget as his boss did trusted us to put it to best use.

The idea of turning up in Wanganui without visiting first and having a house to go to made me go . I couldn't expect my husband to go to his first day at work in a new job from a motel.

There's plenty of people that have though. Anyway, that's not our story.

Your post is a example of how comparisons are difficult to make.

Yis! Exactly.

We came here thankful for all the job offers for my OH. There were many. Trades were in big shortage which meant we could choose to try a new life here.
We were not exactly given the whole picture back then which has made it tough but , bottom line, it gave us an opportunity to try something, somewhere else.

If we need specialised people here in NZ and from the shortages lists it seems we do, then I am happy to have our government offer incentives to help them come and live right down here at the bottom of the world. It is money well spent to get those skills onboard.

As several older Kiwis have said through the decade we have been here, NZ needs people that can do and will care.

The thing is for those people to do the right thing by their visas as the rest of us have to do and then to stay.

It is high time you joined us in the Kiwi Bar BM.

I have peeped in to read recently but didn't want to be intrusive. So I appreciate your kind invitation Bev.
