Christmas makes me sad

Re: Christmas makes me sad
I'm looking forward more to the summer season and time off work than Christmas itself. We've tried doing the traditional hot meal with turkey, we've tried a few years of picnics in Central Otago. Last year we went away on holiday and were in Auckland watching The Hobbit on Christmas Day.
This year I have no idea what we're doing on the day itself. So far I've put no decorations up and bought no gifts as yet. I'm feeling like a bit of a scrooge, but I just can't get into the swing of it!

I am happy enough to have our Christmas here in NZ, I'm with Mr BEVS after all but it will not ever seem quite right somehow. Nor having to take extended holiday at this time.
I used to think it was because of my lovely old Dad (RIP) but now know it is something more deeply entrenched in me.
Too old probably.

Re: Christmas makes me sad
This is a really poignant thread.
For my part, Xmas day itself in the UK is a little over-rated and over so quickly. It's the run-up to Xmas that I love: the office parties or get-togethers with friends, some shopping, the lights, general buzz and goodwill. Love it.
As someone who is in the opposite situation: Kiwi expat now settled in the UK, but missing my mum, sisters and little nephews and can't be with them in Auckland on Xmas day to scoff salads, guzzle wine and sit outside, maybe near a beach... can I wish everyone here a wonderful Xmas or Winter/Summer Solstice or whatever holiday you and your loved ones celebrate.
Make it a good one.

Re: Christmas makes me sad
fiancé / fiancée .....which ever is the womany one
proposed last week, she's a born n bred kiwi lass,
I thought I'd try a change this time as the last English model I tried turned out to be faulty.
I've inherited a new family (all grown up and left home, thank goodness) so Xmas is different
but in a good way...still miss my boys though

Re: Christmas makes me sad
This is going to be our 9th Christmas in NZ. I am not looking forward to it at all, it just makes me sad. I feel like I have missed out 9 times. I can't bear to hear Slade's " Merry Christmas everybody", it breaks my heart. Too many memories of great times in the pub over the years.
I don't want to have anymore BBQs for Christmas day, then a walk on the beach. It does not feel special. I want it to be cold, have a proper Christmas dinner, real Christmas TV, hear proper Christmas carols, go to the pub and have a laugh with people who have got a good sense of humour.
So we have decided this will be our last and the next one will be back in Blighty and all the ones after that.
I am just too English to stay away any longer, I need the country lanes, the Yorkshire moors, the village pub, concerts ( Roger Chapman and Family reformed and played Clumber Park and I missed it - f@#k)
I want to feel alive again.

We have been here long enough now that I recognise the kiwi traditions at this time of year and quite like them - the cherries and strawberries being in season, the hot weather, the Cookie time girls coming round selling their Cookie Time christmas buckets. But they are not the traditions I grew up with and love. I know there is more to life than one day of the year for sure. And I hate the excess of Christmas in the UK but I loved the 'feel' of christmas at home. I have so many cherised memories of Christmasses spent at home with my family. This time of year makes me realise more than ever that they leave a huge void which cannot be filled. It is the lonliest time of year for me

Re: Christmas makes me sad
This is my first Christmas in NZ, and I am struggling quite a bit too. As with many 'firsts' I really question what I have done. Fingers crossed I will get used to it, but right now my tree doesnt sparkle until its time for bed
( I am loving the sunshine all the same though...) !!
