Christmas - the difference in NZ
WOW! I am working in the USA at the moment and the TV is FULL of Xmas stuff - full-on advertising, pressure to buy, carols, adverts, dressed up actors..... you name it
I love the low key NZ Xmas - it will be our third in NZ this year, and last year I almost forgot to send any cards, it is so laid back here

Re: Christmas - the difference in NZ
overall, though, it's surely better to have a christmas holiday season and a july/august holiday season rather than two rolled into one and then a long winter gap with nothing much to look forward to

I'm not even out of November and I'm already sick to death of ****ing Santa Claus.
I would say "bah humbug" but that would be too old-fashioned for the over-commercialised borefest that Christmas has become.

Who's right? The OP says it is so laid back that they forget to send Christmas cards, then someone else says they are 'sick to death of ****ing Santa Claus'. There will always be different perceptions of the same scenario, but these 2 views would appear too disparate to be talking about the same place. Just asking.

Probably stating the obvious here but I think it's just what you're used to. I grew up in NZ and the Christmas card thing was limited to people you wouldn't see, i.e they lived far away. When I moved to the UK I thought it was very strange to give cards to colleagues and people who you would see on Christmas day. Still felt a bit false after 24 Christmas's there. Not criticising the custom at all, it's just different.

I have made two Christmas cakes of which one will be raffled off at Centrestage theatre, Orewa. The other I'll take to the beach on Christmas Day to share with friends (must remember to give it it's final feed of alcohol this week before the marzipan & icing go on ).
On the day we will head to the beach in the afternoon & meet up with a gang of our friends. We all take something to eat & drink & generally just enjoy the company
To make up for the lack of cold & dark, we have a mid-winter Christmas in June/July. We have a three-course Xmas dinner with all the trimmings. Party poppers, crackers etc. The Christmas tree goes up (though the OH does complain about this ), we have Christmas music & just have a jolly good time.
Christmas comes but twice a year in New Zealand for us

And I nearly forgot because we live quite rural and there really are no day to day reminders of Xmas looming....

Oooh, good idea. I'm using Amazon for some but a hamper might make it look like I put a bit of effort in.
Love your mid year celebration idea too. I agree that it would be nice to have an excuse for a mid year party/holiday.
