Looking at Google maps and entering Waltham to Christchurch Hospital under the 'get directions' button and selecting walking, it is giving 3.3/3.4 km and a time of 42/43 mins. I find that I usually walk places faster than the time they give but it gives you an idea.

No worries . There are also a couple of buses that go from Waltham to the hospital - the 18 and 28. If you buy a Metrocard, it costs $2.30 each way, with a maximum of $4.60 a day or $23.00 per week. That means that if you use your pass for other journeys outside of commuting to work, it's free

December 8th - The Wine and Food Festival yay!!!!!

One of the best events that take place at Hagley Park. Thoroughly recommend the event to anyone. It was the beginning of discovering that there are better wines out there than Oyster Bay

It is very well managed as well. If you're a bit concerned about alcoholics anonymous turning up, the staff are usually spot on when identifying people that have had too much. They usually get thrown out of the event. Oh and little kids can go - obviously the new arrival will not be tasting any wine despite being so tempted to introduce him to fine dining at a young age

There is still a lot of demolition work to be done before the rebuild in CBD starts however minor work like retaining walls etc have started in Lyttelton and roads...well....everywhere.

Hard to put a timescale on it but depends what you specialise in i.e. demolition, roading, groundworks, steelwork will all give you a different answer.

Well oh is in the roofing sector ....I hope when it does start to go it does with ernest ....it's a real dilemma we are heading over at the start of the new year and are starting to get real worried as to if jobs will be available ! Do we go else where ? I know there will be heaps of work once it starts ...but it's just WHEN? ....I know there must be lots of others in the same boat :-(

I would imagine there will be plenty of roofing work outwith the 'rebuild', as the EQC are renovating/fixing thousands of homes and much of this will be roofing. Don't think of the rebuild as one big project as its a decent sized city with bits and bobs being done all over and not limited to the big buildings in the CBD....

There is a lot of work in Chch and without looking into it I think a qualified roofer would comfortably get work.

Hello everyone,

I had forgotten about this thread until I saw it in my profile history!

How's everyone in Chch? Looks like it'll be our turn soon as the OH has a job offer, just finalising the contract and police check.

Thank you!

Will you not be moving any more?

It was a bit of a surprise really in our case. The OH had been applying for IT jobs on Seek and most of the replies were "we like your skill set but contact us once you're out here." Then an email comes through asking him to do a Skype interview, which he passed and then did a technical test which also went well. They called to offer him the job one week ago. We're holding off the excitment just incase it falls through. Once the contract is signed and flights are booked we will be popping the champagne! Hopefully if all goes well we will arrive in Chch middle end of January.

Wow,

That's great news, congratulations!

It seems real quick too, you don't say when you got the job offer but it seems a quick turnaround to think you'll be in chch in jan!

All the best

Hi, thank you for the well wishes!

He got the job offer one week ago. At the moment the company are running a background and reference check so when all that goes through he will be expected to start in their words "in the new year". We would have to compromise on this as I doubt we'll be able to make it out until mid Jan at least. The reason he can start quickly is because he has a working holiday visa already.

Where are you based?
