Thanks Mark, we managed to get it moved, something like SOS Towing so we're all sorted now.

Take the vertical (N/S) line through the city centre and the West side suffered a lot less damage than the East. Basically any where near water, sea or river, suffered badly. Hence the areas less effected are the more expensive.

Live somewhere that doesn't result in touching these roads

New Brightons a great place for families. Big park close by, beach as well - cheap to live, far cheaper than Sumner. Also just a short 20 minute drive to the city centre

It depends what you are after.
I live on the hill because I didn't want the smog in winter and have views that I only dreamed of in the UK.
I commute to the CBD in 15-20mins so traffic isn't an issue for me.

Hi board, we're also moving to ChCh soon, family of 6 (four kids). I'll be arriving for a look around next week, anyone got any helpful hints and tips on areas I should look at property and school wise? I'll be working near the airport.

The Airport is NW of the city and less effected by the EQ's so Burnside, Avonhead are good house/school areas as is Hei Hei/Ilam and down towards Hornby so get your map out and radiate out from the Airport.

Hello Junfan,

Areas in NW tend to be on the expensive side. We just moved from Ilam which is about a 10 min drive to the airport and were paying $440 per week for a 2 bedroom house which is not a bad price for that area. We just purchased our first home (what a nightmare house hunting in Christchurch) in Opawa which is very close to the hills and probably about a 20-25 min commute to the airport. I would look at a map and check out property on trademe.co.nz Don't be surprised if you view homes for rent where there are 15 other people looking. Once you get above the $500 per week mark there is less competition for homes I was told by an real estate agent - good luck.
