Me too - although I live 20/30 mins north - Christchurch is great to get around and lovely shops too!:)

Amazing really that the capital is the 3rd most populated area.

Not that unheard of:

Canberra - about 7th or 8th largest in Oz.
Washington DC - maybe top 20 in US?
Ottawa - top 10 maybe in Canada.
Bern (until the 90s) - maybe top 20 in West Germany.
Edinburgh - 2nd in Scotland.
The Hague - 4th or 5th at a guess in Netherlands.
Brasilia - 3rd? in Brazil
Pretoria - 4th or 5th in South Africa.


Others that probably should be added to the above list are China, Pakistan, Switzerland, Morroco and India. In fact outside of Europe it starts to look like the norm to have a smaller city as the capital.
