christchurch nightlife??
Does any exist??
I've read alot of thread's on here and the same stories of walking, greenery, biking, skiing etc. recently the work/life balance thread where everything is same same, I don't know if I'm asking a stupid question here or what but is there places still open within the city that have some life to them??
I'm coming from Manchester which is now one of most multi cultural cities in the UK with Art's/Music/Culture and more....can this of sorts be found in Chch?

Re: christchurch nightlife??
It may be thought that people living in NZ get up earlier and as a consequence retire to bed that bit earlier too. For sure a couple of places I've seen after 09.30pm on the NI are rather quiet. This is an observation and not a rule.

There's nowhere in NZ that comes even close to the nightlife in places like Manchester, not even close.
Saying that I ended up having a half decent night the last time I was up in Christchurch, it was red hot and we started off in Smash Palace and visited a few of the bars around there. Considerably cheaper that drinking in Dunedin too, Dunedin really is the most expensive place to go out boozing I've been to in NZ.

On the very rare occasion, you'll find this expat struggling to stand up straight after having way too many Speights and cheeky Vodkas from a night out in Merivale. It used to be the club capital when the city centre was shut but now the centre is re-opening, it's not as bad now. Most people out round here Friday and Saturday nights either head to the centre after 11pm - some may stay till 1 or 2.
The centre is opening up. There's a decent Irish bar on Tuam or St Asaph Street that stays open until 4am I think. I also think the two bars on Manchester Street have re-opened. Plus there's Calendar Girls that I sometimes visit when the wife is getting on my nerves. I'd recommend the Corporate Affairs lounge if you're rich, $50.00 for a whisky and a private dance.
Just to give you a word of warning - there's a lot of debate going on about Christchurch nightlife. Whilst you'll always have some who go way over the top, good old nanny state is trying to clamp down on drinking. The ideas from the top of my head are as follows
1: Our elite are looking at banning bars and clubs from serving alcohol after 1am
2: No entry into bars and clubs after 1am
3: No alcohol can be sold in off-licences and supermarkets after 9pm. Currently its 11pm.
By the way, it's not as good as Manchester. Oh the memories of Saturday nights out there after a Wednesday away game in Lancashire. Used to go to the Printworks a lot and then catch the last train back to Sheffield. Loved that place

If nightlife is a key component in what you are looking for, then New Zealand is unlikely to satisfy you. Not saying it absolutely wont, just that it might get a bit samey - but then I don't know Christchurch all that well. Those Cantabrians are a special breed
As it is, I've come to quite enjoy the drinking round people's houses culture over here. But then I guess that depends on knowing people who like to entertain and have the suitable facilities to make it enjoyable.
I've barely been to a pub or bar since arriving in July and I'm hardly pining for it - I only live a 5-10 minute walk to most of the bars on Ponsonby Road, so it's not like I'm stuck for choice.

Correct on the 83, and it's not like tthe nightlife is my whole reason behind my coming to chch, it's the job 1st, party 2nd (I use this term very loosely)...
All I'm after is somewhere to have few beer's, a laugh and wind down the day
I'm easily pleased

The lads around the re build include quite a few Irish workers and the Irish have been known to like a little tipple now and again Riccarton area is quite lively and plenty of eating places to boot. Club culture is live here but not so for young types. As Tom says everywhere in the World boasts an Irish Pub.
God's I used to drink in Flanagan's Pub in Pudong area of Shanghai

There is also The Club on Thursday/Friday/Saturday nights. My 24 year old daughter went there on a visit from the UK. She said it was buzzing from around 10pm but very quiet before then. The music was great, as was the atmosphere, according to my clubbing girl

I would echo Tommy's sentiments. The pub culture here isn't quite that of a UK city. But there is still fun to be had and there are some decent places to do this! I'm sure your work mates will be happy to show you around. Also try www.meetup.com for anything ranging from nights out to sewing nights! I saw a meet up the other week for pizza and beers at Baretta, which is a cool place. Check out Pegasus Arms for live music and Pomeroys for awesome beers! Smash Palace is worth a look, it's a bar in a container, very Chch! Pub quizzes are quite popular in Chch if that's your thing. The Casino is popular too, it has a few bars inside and a night club.

I live in Auckland and I think of it as a city where people get up early and go to bed early. I think that Rotorua is the same.
There are other places where I don't think anything happens before 10:00 am - Wellington, Napier, Dunedin.
