Default Christchurch, New Zealand

We are thinking of going to Christchurch - have family there and wondered if anyone could suggest a suburb to look for accomodation in? We are a couple late twenties/early thirties and like socialising - not mad clubbing it though! Also like being close to the coast if possible. Would like to find a suburb with a nice small feeling to it but not too far from everything! Not asking for a lot eh??!!

Any advice please?

There was a long thread packed with info/opinions about CC suburbs a few weeks ago, and there have been others before. Search for Christchurch on this site and you'll find plenty of stuff. From memory, Cashmere is one area that lots of people recommend.

Cheers,
John

Cashmere is nice, nicely flowing gradient with shops and close to city. However need telescope to see the sea. We liked Mount Pleasant and Scarborough (expensive). Sumner by sea but flattish between the before mentioned. Took some pics if you want me to e-mail them to you (Monday at earliest). You'll be on the coast at Brighton - didn't go but not recommedned on the Forum.

Sumner had bars but NZ unlike UK in the convenience of staggering home pubs as everything seems to be in the centres of towns.

Naturally the seaside bits were more expensive.

Default beachside suburbia

the chch east coast beach is rather long provides suburbia aplenty.
new/north/south brighton used to be cheap property, seaside suburbia -very average in price & locale, not a lot in way of social amenities.
southshore peninsula is pretty cool as many properties have beach in backyard but price is probably suitably more.
redcliffs/sumner/scarborough are more trendy reflected in property prices, easier access to social type venues .
there are other areas eg lyttleton - is a harbour rather than beach though.
you're more likely to get that "samll suburb feel" in sumner or lyttleton but you'll afford a better place closer to water somewhere in brighton.

Check out www.Harcourts.co.nz.
I have a best mate in St Albans which is nice and friendly apparently
Sumner is a nice area too.

Thanks for all the info. Will check out the other threads and check websites about the suburbs you all mentioned.

Any pics would be really appreciated Roger.
