Christchurch -This day last year
185 people would not see the sunset in the city of Christchurch
Many buildings, including the symbol of Christchurch (the cathedral) got damaged beyond repair
RIP to all those 185 people (including 3 toddlers) that lost their lives to the February 6.3 earthquake on this day last year.

Re: This day last year
I feel very lucky to have chosen to live on the west side, that I was working where I was working on that day and that everyone I knew at 12.51pm a year ago is still with us. Does not feel like a whole year has passed-the quake and aftermath is still very very clear in my mind. Just wish we could be certain of no more big aftershocks but we all know that's something no one could ever know
So sorry for everyone who lost loved ones a year ago, RIP

Re: Christchurch -This day last year
Just back from the memorial service. Sam (whose moving account I posted on here) found it quite tough going, especially as we went by bus. He has not been back to that part of the city and when we walked through Restart he said it felt wrong. I was hoping that he would start to look forward but I think it's not quite there for him yet.
Incredibly moving when they read the names of the 185 that lost their lives due to the events on that day.

All thoughts are with Cantabrians and the people of Christchurch on this particular day.
Eternal rest for those that were lost. Onward and upward for all those remaining.
Hopefully a good future ahead.

The main message that 'came through' is of a nation of people who have the ability to get together to help themselves and get on with it......so many Brits here picked up on the same trait......says so much about Kiwi backbone...

Re: Christchurch -This day last year
Thinking of you all today, I was fortunate that my relatives escaped unscathed (some only by a matter of moments from buildings that bodies were pulled out of later). I remember Christchurch as a beautiful, friendly, serene city. You wonderful, strong people will get through this together - kia kaha
