Cheapest way to call UK LANDLINES from NZ
Hi Guys,
I don't want to use my mobile phone in nz to call home as the cost is so costly. Do I use a public pay phone to call back home in England or is there any cheaper options?
Kind Regards,
Imz

Go into a Dairy, and check out the range of pre-pay calling cards.
I use one .. Buzz? You can make calls from either a NZ landline, or vodafone mobile. Think mine is about 20c connection charge, and 8c a min thereafter?

We call UK from home landline (Telstraclear). We put code in first before number and get cheaper rate (0505). I think both Telecom and Telstraclear offer overseas packages. Teebrown said recently on another thread she using a pre-paid card and calls UK for 1.5c/min (but do you think I can find her post to check that! I cannot!). A lot of people use Skype but I haven't so can't really offer any info on that.

Hi Both,
I don't think I will have access to a landline phone or skype. Can I use those pre paid phone cards in a public phone or a hotel phone?
I may buy that Buzz card as I will need to call UK nearly everyday.
THANKS FOR YOUR HELP FOLKS MOST APPRECIATED !!

Hi
We use KiaOra card for calling all over the world. It costs 3.9c per minute including GST - you can use it from a hotel landline I believe as you have to put in an access code and pin and then dial your international number. Cheap as!!

we use chi-tel card to call uk (got ours at new world, but see them most places they have all the cards!) - same one TeeBrown used to recommend... dunno if this is still the same one she uses - have never sussed exactly how much it costs us, but i was on for 1.5hours one night last week and it cost just over a dollar.

Vodafone do 2 for 2 - that is $2 for 2 hours of calling time. Get all the family together in one place in the UK, call them and spend the 2 hours talking to each one individually!

Be careful, be VERY careful!! Buy a card that let you call an 0800 XXXX number. As in most hotels 0800s are free or just 20ct connection...
I had yesterday an American man (to whom I had told he needs to buy a card with an 0800) arguing the toss that I was overcharging him... Did I refund him?? HELL NO! lol

Got to be Skype for me, most internet cafe's should have the facilities. It's easy to set up an account. PC 2 PC is free, and PC 2 phone is much cheaper than other alternatives, and quality usually good.

a useful feature is that you can also use some as prepaid internet dialup access but beware of the actual phone costs for that as even in Auckland there may be high call costs for calling the dial-up from places like Hibiscus Coast.
good luck

Re: Cheapest way to call UK LANDLINES from NZ
When we first arrived we paid vodafone $40 a month to pay all over the world 24/7 but we actually found we didnt use it as much as we thought, so cancelled it. We use skype as i love being able to see the people i'm talking to, my gran loves it as she feels she is sitting with me. We also bought (through skype im sure) a uk phone number, what happens is we get a glasgow number and our family can call us on it, the number transfers to our housephone and all they get charged is a local rate call(if they get free calss this applys) so its really cool my gran can call us for nothing and all we pay is a one off payment of 25 euros a year or something like that.
