Re: cheap calls
I think Go Talk works out to be cheaper for calling the UK than calling within the UK!!!

A tip for your friend in the UK, Post Office sell phone cards (£5, £10, £20) for use abroad. Dead easy - freephone number that instructs you to key in number on your phone card then you dial as usual.
I use them to ring my sister in OZ. A £5 card usually lasts me two very long calls of approx 2 hours each (or just under)
Hope this is useful

You can still SkypeOut if you have broadband and your pal only has a landline
http://www.skype.com/products/skypeout/rates/
this says the rate is 0.017 Euro / minute or 69p an hour. I'm going to get a couple of Skype phones before we leave.

Is Waikanae a local call to Wellington?
If so buy yourself a 'Talk 'n Save' phone card from a newsagent. You the use it from your landline phone and it costs 3.25 cents per minute. I make that $3.90 for two hours!
If not, I'm sure there is another 'make' of phone card you can get that will give you similar.

Re: cheap calls
Telecom do an offer (at the weekends) when it costs 8 c / minute. All you do is dial 0161 44 (and then the rest of the number). You don't need to register and it comes through on your monthly bill (no upfront costs). The catch is that the phone line is not as good as their regular line, but if you just want to make a quick call (i.e. less than an hour!) then it's OK.
The second cheapest way is to get your family to ring you! Have a look at niftylist.com for a current list of options, but my family tend to use www.dialwise.co.uk (about 2p / min).
Of course the absolute cheapest way is to use Skype (www.skype.com), which is free, if you have internet access and your family uses it. You can even call to a landline (I think it is just over 1p / min).

Did you see the announcement at the top of the NZ discussion forum page entitled 'Your Very Own UK Telephone Number' or very similar posted by Administrator Sue. If not, take a look as I think you may be very interested in light of this thread which immediately came to mind when I read Sue's message. Carmen.
