Changing the NZ flag
The general discussion on the radio lately is about changing the NZ flag. It has been suggested in parliament this week again.
If you had to make the decision... What would you're flag look like?

There is a perpetual campaign to change the flag but no one can agree on a better design. It's much the same debate as with the UK national anthem...if Jerusalem had never been written .

Re: Changing the NZ flag
It should look like the Canadian flag but instead of a maple leaf there should be a picture of a sheep and it should be in royal blue instead of red.
I do think it should be changed though, too many flags with the Union flag in the top left corner, it's very confusing. National flags, State flags, provincial flags. Even Hawaii has got it.
Just don't go with a complex pictograph like Alberta because that thing is a nightmare to draw.

Re: Changing the NZ flag
It's that time of year when there's even less news than usual and nothing else to talk about so we have to bring up the perpetual debate as to whether we should have a Silver Fern, Tino Rangatiratanga, leave as is or something else.
The only way forward will be a combination of all four options, as they'll never agree and it will end up back in the too hard basket as soon as something slightly more interesting happens.

John Keys face on a hundred dollar bill with a background of a maori family of 7 eating chips and bread for dinner.

Re: Changing the NZ flag
As long as it's not something awful I suppose.
Aesthetically:
- No more than three colours (two colours if you are using black or it looks stupid).
- Rectangle.
- Simple block design.
- Contain some memorable geometric pattern that a child could sketch.
Historically:
- Must retain the Union flag in some form.
- Probably needs some Maori influence.
So if we form a committee to appoint a working group to employ a graphic design agency who will seek expert advice we'll ensure that the flag is never actually changed. That's why we've never changed the flag.

I am not a New Zealand citizen so I don't think that I have any right to say one way or the other.
One of my kiwi friends mentioned the flag to me the other day. Her opinion was that the Silver Fern is a sports flag and as a result is not appropriate to use as a national flag.
