Changes to NZ State Pension
 

Hi to all,

There are two main changes to NZ State Pensions (NZ Superannuation or NZ Super) that could impact retirees at age 65.

1. Non-Qualifying Partners: "Currently, some people getting NZ Super or Veteran's Pension can choose to include their partner who doesn't qualify for these, into their payments. From 9 November 2020, it's proposed people won't be able to include a non-qualifying partner into their payments. Instead, their partner would be able to apply for other kinds of assistance. You can still apply to include a non-qualifying partner in your NZ Super or Veteran's Pension payment up until the changes come into effect. There haven't been any changes to eligibility criteria right now. "
Up until 9th of November, it has been possible for one person aged 65 to claim the NZ Super, while their partner could claim a NZ Superannuation benefit as a "Non-Qualifying Partner" regards of age (subject to income limits as per the Work & Income criteria).

2. Overseas Pensions: "Currently, if your partner gets an overseas pension, this can affect your NZ Super or Veteran's Pension payment. This depends on the amount of their overseas pension. From 9 November 2020, it's proposed your NZ Super or Veteran's Pension won't be affected by your partner's overseas pension. This change means you'll be treated more as an individual."
This clause mainly had an effect on European State and Private Pensions. UK Private Pensions do not have any impact on NZ State pension benefits (this has not changed). Either way, it will help to clear up an issue that has plagued a small number of retirees (I understand that it is less than 600 people).
