Default Chalets / Self Catering recommendations?

Hi all, we are hoping to visit New Zealand for a month in Feb / March time next year & are thinking of renting self catering units / chalets, splitting our time equally between the North & South Islands, as we have a 2 year old & don't want to be driving to new accommodation each night / every other night, but having a base as such to do day trips from when we want to! It will be our first trip to NZ & I am hoping that we will like it enough to want to move there! I know a holiday isn't the same as living in a place before anyone jumps on me but we all have to start from somewhere & my OH isn't keen on me planning everything for a reccie - which is very hard for a person like me who likes to plan!!! My OH foremost wants a holiday & see how things go from there!

Can anyone recommend a good website who have s/c units / chalets? Or even recommend individual places to stay, or even just good central points to work from? I'm finding it hard to know where to start! Any pointers greatly appreciated!

We stayed in some nice motels that had catering facilities. Try Expedia, they give you lots of info and you can look up the individual sites to check out all the facilities. Enjoy your trip!!!

Can recommend Top Ten Holiday Parks (see web site), most of them have self catering cabins in parks on both islands, if you are going to use them its worth becoming a member to get 10% discount on all bookings. also worth checking out wotif.com for s/c apartments.

there are motels everywhere in nz you can stay as short or long as you like.
Some are very low quality and even some of the good ones are a little grubby
so choose carefully.
Try the AA website http://www.aa.co.nz/travel/Pages/default.aspx

I'm with Col here, the AA book has proved invaluable on many occasions (once you arrive you can pick it up for free and get maps etc at AA shops)

Also worth considering backpackers- very economic compared to motels -all age groups welcome- even as locals, we enjoy meeting other travellers in them, who can give advice on what can be done in those areas - in NZ they aren't like the old-fashioned YHA -most have private rooms - BBH booklet gives ratings- enjoy your trip

I'd recommend:
www.bookabach.co.nz
and
www.holidayhouses.co.nz
for individual kiwi-style holiday houses. Quality is mixed from basic kiwi holiday cottages to luxury apartments, but generally good and in some great locations
wotif.com is also good for some great short-notice deals
