Cell phones in Aus

Hi all, Please can someone offer some advice on the topic of cell phones in Aus. Me & my partner are going on hols to Aus in December, have just found out that the text cost on Telecom/2degrees to use in Aus is HUGE and wondered if it would be better to buy a sim there to use as we text heaps and will be all over the place with kids in theme parks!! Any ideas gratefully received

Yes it will be cheaper.

BBC suggest a clever alternative however if you use Skype.

Hi, we did exactly this in May. OH, 2 kids and I went over for 2 weeks. We bought 2 sim cards for AU$30 each which gave you a month's credit and about $500 worth of calls and texts - much more than we needed. Definitely better than paying roaming costs. I just sent a text to relevant people giving them the number so they could send texts while we were away if necessary.

Shop around a bit (could do this online before you go). We got told by a phone salesman in the mall about our deal - he told us to buy it at the supermarket as they had 15% off the recharge costs at the time (nice one!).

Have a great holiday!

Buy an Amaysim card for three bucks. Then get heaps of data (4 Gig) plus unlimited national calls and texts all for $39.90 a month, and no contract. Just check the coverage before you load it up with credit, it uses the Optus network.
