Hi

I have been browsing the car rentals for when we arrive. Anyone any good/bad experiences? What sort of prices did you pay, how long did you need a rental for? I understand it is cheaper to arrange from uk before we arrive.

Any thoughts greatly received.

There are a few places just off from the airport for about £14 per day unlimited mileage. But the cars are basic (clean and tidy) ie 1.3 no ac, no electrics. Not rent a bombs just small basic cars.

We used Maui and booked over the internet before leaving UK. There were five of us with thirteen pieces of luggage so hired a large holden estate - cost was around 28 pounds a day but that was a few years back so the price may well have gone up. Kept the car for a month and worked really well allowing us time to get around a bit and not rush into buying.

More recently went down south and hired 'rent a dent' from Chrischurch airport. As a NZer cost me $70 a day for a 1.6 Mitsubishi something or other. Went OK but wouldn't say it was cheap.

I'm impulsive, so I rented for 1 week and then bought a car from Albany Toyota, who also have a lot on the North Shore. My rental was cheap, arranged by AA in Takapuna, who I would reccomend to anyone for helpful staff and a smile. My rental was cheaper than the airport crowd, which helped offset the cost of the taxi from the airport to Spencer on Byron.

We've got 2 weeks through holiday autos, AKL >>> WTN for £320 I don't know if that's good or bad but compared to UK prices seems OK - when you get your booking confirmation through HA you get to see who is lending you the car, in this case its Hertz so should be pretty good.

I wouldn't rent for longer than a week. It's such a buyer's market for used cars here just now. Check out autotrader.co.nz, and make sure you're ready to haggle.
