Re: Car Mayhem is getting worse in New Zealand (if thats possible)
To address a few of the points made above:
"Why don't you and a group of friends [also annoyed] identify the culprits- take their photos, video them."
- what and get stabbed, bottled, or beaten to a permanently disabled pulp?
"This is an interesting problem although it has a half solution. Ususally young people gather in crowds and cause trouble because they have no interests or are bored and want to start fights."
- Christchurch is the largest city in the South Island , situated between the mountains and the sea - there are a million things to do. Boredom is no excuse (why do people seem compelled to find excuses for the illegal behaviour that these scrotes choose to indulge in?)
"Are there no disused airfields or large tracks of land , which could be turned into some supervised race track++++ associated training in car maintainance/dismantling/rebuilding/customising?
Local Government grants + a small contribution from local businesses could help funding"
- I don't expect ratepayers and local businesses to pay for my hobbies. Why should they be forced to support the interests of these far less deserving individuals?
Cheers,
Steve

If you havent witnessed the antics of the typical NZ Boy Racer scum first hand, or heard the sheer number of ridiculously louds modified cars, then you may find it hard to comment.
I dont think this has got anything to do with giving them an off-road strip to play on. They still have to get there, and most of the cars shouldnt be on the road in the first place.
Yes, there was a car rally in ChCh this weekend, but its not like its a one-off. Even in the previous 2 weeks ChCH has seen police men and locals attacked and had a visit from the Minister for Police because of the obviously out of control nature of whats going on.
Dont pretend its only ChCh. It may be worst there but this is a national culture fuelled by inadequate regulation and inadequate desire to stamp on the idiots by successive Government.
These are not a few hoons out doing silly things, or kids in flash cars that are being picked on by the police.
Go find their websites and read their moronic attitudes
FTP (F**k The Police) is one group that has been reported recently.
As for whether this is big enough issue to reconsider emmigration, I would seriously suggest it is.
Tell that to the guy who bought his home and after being subjected to boy racers every night for 2 weeks finally snapped and took after the idiots with a golf club?
The other concern is whether the Government and population have the guts and/or ability to actually do anything about it. These issues have been banded about for years without any noticeable improvement.
The point is that many people seem to think (I did once) that New Zealand is a quiet place, a place different from the UK.
It aint, the cities are haunts for hoons, and the remoter countryside is very gang-oriented
The stories are there to read on www.stuff.co.nz
If you want to close your eyes to it, fine.

I agree with what you're saying, my point was don't tar boy racers and car enthusiasts with the same brush.
And as for Stuff - take at least half of the "news" stories with a pinch of salt

This is another example of the weekends lovely 'car culture'

Boy racers invaded the grounds of Princess Margaret Hospital at the weekend, partying loudly outside children's ward windows, staff say.
Over 100 cars entered the grounds and filled the carpark and roads circling the hospital late on Friday night and into Saturday morning.
A nurse, who declined to be named, said boy racers had "parked up" at the hospital for more than an hour, drinking, yelling and squealing their tyres.
Some tapped on windows of the entranceway-facing wards which include the Child and Family Inpatient Unit, Eating Disorders, and the Mothers and Babies Unit.
Patients were woken but not distressed, she said.
The nurse said the boy racers were there for over an hour.

Actually I've never got that rule, I don't see cars that have wheels that protrude past the arches are dangerous?
It's the ones without suspension or with a rock hard suspension that worry me . Might work on a smooth racetrack but on public roads they are an accident waiting to happen for quite a few reasons.

The point is that many people seem to think (I did once) that New Zealand is a quiet place, a place different from the UK.
It aint, the cities are haunts for hoons, and the remoter countryside is very gang-oriented
[/QUOTE]Another sweeping statement B, I appreciate you hate it NZ as you freely admit..but to say the above is scare mongering. I have lived within the 'city limits' of a large town (pop. C 75k) for 4 years..its NOT mayhem..neither is it in the middle of town as I have witnessed when I visit during the evenings and weekends, sure there are boy racers all over NZ but you make out if you live in town your life will be ruined by pricks with noisy cars and if you chose the rural aspect you will be hounded by the gangs. THAT IS NOT TRUE.
I would rather live here (with the exception of 2 areas) than any inner city environment in the UK. You are doing the same as the tabloid press and making it out to be worse than it is. Sure there are some REALLY bad things going on all over NZ but suggesting people don't move here because of gangs and boy racers?

This was a recent release from the National Foundation for the Deaf - not an organisation to do things without good reason youd think
(http://www.scoop.co.nz/stories/PO0902/S00060.htm)
At last , someone pointing out the blindingly obvious
Cars 4 times as loud as normal, this is totally unacceptable. And they were out there 'in there hundreds and thousands" this weekend in just one place.
Why does "quiet green 100% Pure" NZ tolerate this sh*t?
Maybe the image is just a load of crap.
NZ is infested with these crappy things.
The National Foundation for the Deaf (NFD) wants tougher action on New Zealand’s boy racers as their constant noise could be damaging our health.
Marianne Schumacher, executive manager of the National Foundation for the Deaf, says the Government needs to move swiftly and firmly on the culprits who are literally driving residents to despair with their loud exhausts, screeching tyres and excessive car stereos.

“The effect of this noise pollution is far more than hearing damage – it can have a huge impact on our physical and mental health. Persistent noise has been linked with increased stress levels, headaches, aggressive behavior, loss of sleep and in some cases even heart disease and high blood pressure.” says Ms Schumacher.
Stuart Camp, director of Marshall Day Acoustics has spent considerable time during the past year on the streets of Christchurch to record the noise levels boy racers are making.
“One series of test we conducted showed that modified cars averaged 95dBA (at 0.5m), with some cars being four times as loud as standard ones.” says Camp.
“The noise the boy racers produce is excessive and unnecessary. Everyone has a fundamental right to freedom but when your actions so heavily impact the lives of others, something must be done.”

Noise pollution is an issue high on the agenda for the NFD. Ms Schumacher says there is a gap in the publics’ awareness that the Foundation is now trying to close.
“The impact of annoying noise has far reaching affects with some research showing strong links between exposure to constant noise and irritability and in some cases, violence.” concluded Ms Schumacher.

Re: Car Mayhem is getting worse in New Zealand (if thats possible)
Good enough reasons for me.
I wouldn't come near this hole if Id known what it was really like.
People here are scared stiff of gangs. No-one will give evidence against them. One trial last week set a world record (true) for the number of witnesses giving evidence behind a screen.
Even the police said last week they wouldnt go into an area of Lower Hutt after dark.
And if you are into gang areas, dont forget Porirua, Hawkes Bay, Rotorua, Eastern Bay of Plenty, Wanganui, Northland, Jesus is there anywhere left?

There are gangs in the Manawatu too..but they have never been an issue here for most people. There was a drive by shooting in the rough part of Palmy town a few years back and a big drug bust in one of the motels but don't shootings and drugs happen in all countries?? I still say that so long as you choose your neighbourhood for good aspects like cul de sac, high decile etc you should be okay..and my high decile in April 2005 equated to a mere 166.000 GBP..so not out of most peoples touch aye? Don't think its worth much more these days!!
I respect your views B but I still say that the gangs and knobs in cars are not reasons to cancel NZ as a place to emigrate...for most folk.
