Default Car insurance

Anyone get car insurance and have to prove no claim bonus from uk? Just wondering how much people were paying for car insurance in nz?

They asked me but never asked to verify it. Insurance here seems to be far cheaper than the UK, I pay less that $150 p.a. for a car just over 2L via TradeMe insurance. It only takes a few minutes to run through a quote if you want an idea of how much you'll pay.

I'd recommend comprehensive, unless you have a cheap car, because it's not a legal requirement to have insurance. If one of those uninsured idiots hits you you'd likely have to drag them to court and I doubt you'd ever get your money out of them in reality.

Thanks so much for the reply. I just cancelled my uk AA insurance and completely forgot to ask for a no claims bonus cert, after waiting on hold for 15 mins. Glad I won’t be having to ring them back!

Yeah, car insurance will undoubtedly be cheaper than UK, given it doesn't need to cover personal injury costs, with that being covered by ACC.

I have found that most of the financial rules that I grew up with and learned in the UK don't apply in New Zealand.

It is legal to drive a car without insurance here (see the answer above about ACC - it is not possible to sue for personal injury here so the insurance does not have to cover that event)

I pay for car insurance - so that if an uninsured driver damages my car then getting the money for the repairs is the insurance company's problem not mine.

The most recent bill I can find is about $500 comprehensive insurance for the year - a ten year old car and a forty year old driver.
