is there a firm that allows you to take a car from the North Island over to the South Island and back again or is it you drop one off one side and pick another up on the other side, with all the car hire firms??

I've had a look and Thrifty cars have offices at the ferry port on both sides. This spares you the cost of paying for the car on the ferry. It's on their website. Just a thought!

theres a website that lets you pick up rentals on the south island that need to be returned to the north.
the rental is free, insurance is free, ferry is free, you just pay the gas

ahh ok, let me explain a bit more

In Laws coming over next year. arriving in Auckland, driving down to us in Wellington, then over to the South Island, driving around the South Island, back over to the North Island to us then driving back up to the Auckland. They just wanted to be able to take more of their things over to the South Island for the 2+ weeks they are going to be there. So ideally want the same car all the way through. they have booked hotel/motel as they do not want a camper

Almost all car hire companies will let you collect a car from one office and then drop it off at another.
Ive just checked the first 4 on Google and they all offer that as an option (including picking up on one island and dropping off on the other)

Hertz won't let you. you have to leave car at port and pick up another on the other side. not sure about others as Hertz was the one MIL had booked with. all changed now and has gone with juicy
