Arrow Can you container .................

Household goods with car?

I'm assuming the answer is probably no, but wondered if anyone can let me know for sure?

I believe you can, and I think Rob (Clubley) did this.

Blimey Maz, that was quick!

There has been a previous thread about cars - whether to take them or not, that is? We're still not sure, we're not particularly mathematically minded but are trying to weight up our options. We had our Subaru Forester valued and was told that it was only worth £8,500! Considering it is only two years old, it has more than halved in value and hubby is gutted! Especially, when we know Subaru will probably sell it for 13 or 14k!

Being lazy, we don't know if we want the hassle of trying to sell it privately!

From what I remember, I believe it will cost about £4000 to ship it out?! Would it still be worthwhile, what kind of car could we get for about $10,000? The equivalent of shipping costs?!

Yep sure am. As of Monday this week. A day late thanks to being bumped at Heathrow on Sunday.

Yes you can! If it fits in a container that is! Most companies would build a bulk head behind it to protect it from the household goods. If its not a tall car some companies may even build a strong frame over it to load on to make best use of the space for loading your other belongings. Hope that helps!

Thank you, that does help!

Do you know if they charge extra for the car or is it just the cost of the container?!

There may be a very small difference in cost because of loading, securing, steam cleaning and protecting the car. However, saying that there is not a great deal of difference to be honest whether you fill your container with household goods or some household goods and a car, the cost is basically on size of container and packing and loading.

The cost of loading a car is probably about the same as packing and loading the same volume in household goods, so it would be offset by not taking a whole container of your belongings. if that makes sense...

So could you guesstimate the cost of shipping a Subaru Forester (estate car) with the contents of a 3 bed flat, with or without insurance?!!

I just put your scenario to our international move consultant who would guestimate approximately £5000-£5500 as you'd be looking at a 40ft Container (wouldnt fit much else in a 20ft with the Subaru!). Insurance is 3% of the declared value of the goods you are shipping.

Thank you very much Kirsty, a lot better than I expected!

I think it will still be worth doing. The car fits every criteria. Also, the car has been keyed and scratched (most of the scratches my fault ), so unlike Rob's pristeen car, it won't be as gutting!

Basically, I still think it will be cheaper than buying a 3 year old car when we get there.
