Default Can lorry drivers emigrate to NZ?

Does anyone have any information on this question?

I've found it on the Immediate Skill Shortage List and was wondering what British license would correspond with the NZ Class 5 driver.

Thanks in anticipation of a reply.

You should be able to get a temporary work visa, but as it stands now you likely won't qualify for permanent residence (PR) based on truck driving skills.

There are truckers on this site who are in NZ on temporary work permits.

Marika38
AngPaul are two I can think of.

Hopefully they will be along later. If not, perhaps send them a PM - private message. The truckers themselves are the best ones to tell it how they see it. They may be able to say what their views or hopes are re. gaining Permanent Residency here.

Phil01 has been in NZ for several years but is heading back to the UK . Not because of trucking but because they fancy living in the UK.

Some are due to come out on their temporary work visas

Your best bet, if you want to attain PR -permanent residency - is to find a job that will pay $24.50 per hour over 40 hour week to make $50k per annum.
That way you could try for a Work to Residency visa.
It does seem that as it stands at present, the most truckers can have are renewable temporary work permits. We are all waiting and hoping for a trucker to come along that has gained PR through his occupation.

Hi there,

OH has just got off phone to NZIS, as we knew changes had been made to skills shortage list that could affect lorry drivers. We also have looked on NZIS website and followed the links on the Latest News piece, and you have to download a document, that explains the different trades and skill levels. Things seem promising, and he has just done an online assesment with the man, and as it is now being recognised to gain us enough points to put in an EOI, we got 100 points and the man said that we could put in an EOI with that, BUT if OH can gain NZQA Level 4,( need to look into this more), through his employers, it would give us enough points for automatic selection. OH got the man to confirm this all to him again, just to be sure, and the man confirmed that yes this is the case.
Anyone wanting to confirm for themselves must contact NZIS themselves to hear it from them directly.
Also if anyone knows any more info on this, please let us know.
Our next step will be to look into NZQA certificate, apply for police checks, and get that EOI in ASAP, before they change their minds again,
OH wonders though if you will need to be in some kind of specialist haulage, ie, Petrol or Chemical tankers, logging, etc, if we find out any more about this will let you know.
This is very positive news for Lorry drivers, about time too.
We do hope we have understood this completely correct, would hate to think i was giving wrong info, but we know what we have just been told on phone by NZIS.

We are hopng someone else might read into all of this, OH panicking that he has got it wrong, he feels its too good to be true.

Hi.I'm here with my family on a 3 year work permit driving log trucks.Class 5 is a UK class 1 or C&E same thing. As far as I know and have spoken twice to immigration in NZ myself, as long as you work for an accrerdited company and earn $50 000 by working no less than 30 hours a week( ie you are in permanent employment) you can apply for PR on the basis of Residency from work (not the same as work to residence but similar) after 24 months..The company i work for are having an immiration agent coming to visit with the view of becoming an accredited employer.

That seems positive news too, would be great to hear how that turns out.
Have you spoken to NZIS about this latest ammemdment, would love someone else to hear what we have today too, just so we don't think we were hearing things.

Any job over $50K can qualify for WTR if I'm not mistaken. Residence from Work is a natural progression from WTR after two years. It's just a lot easier if the employer is accredited.

Someone please correct me if I'm wrong...

Sorry I have made it sound confusing, as I said we feel unsure about it all too, but we will keep trying to find out more every day, and let people know. Would be great if someone else could ring NZIS too, we will ring again tomorrow, as sometimes you get different answers to same questions, if we get different answer tomorrow, I'll think we are going mad,

Kip
Hi Kip,
thanks for update on this story, its a sad tale, its a confusing thing, this PR for lorry drivers, it all seems to be based on individual cases. OH has met someone who HAS gained PR as a lorry driver, it took him 4 yrs and it wasn't through WTR, so we know it can be done. We don't have consent of this person to put his story on, so don't feel I can, he dosn't go on Expats himself.

The roller coaser ride continues for us, its a good job we all love coasters !!!!

Should have known it was too good to be true, am feeling so fed up with immigration, , as we dreaded, we rang them again not long ago, and was told something completely different to what we were told yesterday, not such positive news, and it seems as it has been said on here before, that at this time, its not going to happen on points. Can you believe how up and down and confusing this all is, its driving us nuts, so won't be posting on this subject for a while, we're gonna just chill, OH will continue to settle at work, and have we'll catch up with this guy we know who has gained the residency, at least it will be a positive story for us, and something for us to aim for.

OH home early today, so we are all off to beach for a swim and relax.
