You should be able to do it if you go to your profile.. there are some options on the left hand side.. one of those should be to alter your 'signature'.. that is the text under every post.. would that be the timeline then?

Yes, if you press 'My Profile' (top of the screen, left hand side) you'll see 'edit signature' on the left hand side.. click it and type in the text as you like.
