does anyone know whether you can take tents and camping gear to nz, does it all need to be fumeigated, or have we got to sell the tent before going to nz.

I wish we had brought our tent and gear with us. We were wrongly told by our shippers it wouldn't be allowed. Makes no sense when you think of the backpacks and hiking boots that come and go.
Just make sure it is thoroughly clean and use Jeyes fluid. Declare it on your MAF forms and be prepared for an inspection. If it's a no go , they will bin or fumigate it.

All of your camping equipment should be fine, we brought every bit of ours over from Britain. Just make sure all the groundsheets, tent pegs, ropes, inside of the tents and storage bags etc are clean and there's no soil or grass on any of it. (shake out the inside of the tent too) don't forget to clean off any walking boots you have.

The only thing you can't bring are gas cylinders unless they have been properly emptied and certificated (and that's more to do with the shipper's requirements than MAF)

Ditto - you won't have any problems so long as you spend a good afternoon thoroughly cleaning everything and disinfecting it (same goes for all your garden furniture). What you'll find is when your stuff arrives in NZ that MAFF will come and inspect it all - if they are in any doubt that you've not sufficiently cleaned it, then they'll take it away and clean it for you and then send you a heafty bill for doing so.

We didn't bring any garden tools or bikes, HOWEVER, my Dad has been out here several times with his bike - all you need to do is clean it really well (the same applies for buggies and pushchairs). Garden tools (no experience), all the household tools - hammers, screwdrivers etc - they were all cleaned really well before coming out and were fine. Again the rule of thumb is to be honest and clean everything really well.

As long as everything is free of mud, dirt, dust, cobwebs, dead insects, seeds it'll be fine. Bicycles, camping gear, scooter, skateboards, garden tools, DIY tools, hiking boots, BBQs. Bring everything you can just give it all a good brush off, wash down with Jeyes fluid or similar and dry. Any rusty bits can be painted with hammerite or similar, and paint/varnish any barewood so its sealed.
