Default Buying a truck/Car

Should we ever get the elusive blue stickers we will need to buy a truck. We will be living in the Marlborough region so my question to those in the know is this:
Is there enough choice in Blenheim/Nelson or would it time well invested to get the train down to Christchurch and look to try to buy down there? Looking for a Toyota Hilux or Nissan Navara or similar upto $20k

Many thanks in anticipation

Hi nick333

Had a quick look on TradeMe for you, 53 listings in the area.

http://www.trademe.co.nz/browse/cate...=129236&page=1

That's just searching for "ute" though, not specific makes.

Also look at www.turners.co.nz they are an auction house, their nearest one would be in ChCh.

The secondhand carmarket is flooded at the moment Nick, even in Blenheim, but generally you will pay less in Christchurch.

Toyota used vehicles are sold through 'Signature Class' . They can access a vehicle from anywhere in NZ and you can actually get a really good deal at the mo on a brand new Hilux, according to the ad last night
http://www.toyota.co.nz/
Can I suggest that you actually hire a car or by a heap for a month or so, before committing to a purchase.

We lived in Marlborough for 2 years and started off with NZ version of a 'Chelsea tractor' that did what we wanted to, but we were terrified about scratching it ( or drowning it ) and sold it within 2 months of buying it ( and lost heaps on it too)

There are some 'choice' wrecks for sale on the land next to the railway station.

Also to be considered, is the petrol versus deisel thing; deisel is much cheaper than petrol here, however you have to add road user charges, about $200 for 5000kms and also you should get your oil changed every 10,000kms on a deisel engine, so probably works out the same in the long run.

Hope this all helps

Happy shopping when you get here

Better off at 5,000km. A/T fluid every 10k.
Alternatively, block the filter, blow your engine and get a second hand Jap one fitted for about $3,000.

Harken to the voice of experience.
