Re: Burgled...again
I think my point is more that a dog should not be bought solely for the purpose of being a burglar alarm. Get a burglar alarm in that case.
If you want a dog, get a dog. But get a dog because you like long walks, can train it and can afford to have it neutered/spayed, innoculated and pay for vet care if/when it gets sick.

Re: Burgled...again
we have a monitored burglar alarm...it is not a deterrent...but it is to the burglar ransacking your house
I grew up with dogs...best companion you can have in your life....and yes they are a big commitment!! And expensive! But will also stop me being scared in my own home while my partner is away on business (we were thinking of a dog before we got burgled incidently anyway.....it has now just become more of a pressing issue....BUT another issue in NZ is theft of docks for baiting pitbulls....I couldn't live with myself if that ever happened). So don't worry dog lovers...not a reflex reaction to what has happened to me!

Our dog is a great burglar alarm, but she's certainly not chained up anywhere, more likely to be lying on one of our beds!!!!!
If anyone comes up to the house she lets them & us know.
Our previous dog stopped us being burgled in the UK, they got though the window but her barking soon made them run off.
If you don't want a dog, a good alternative is a beware of the dog sign at your front gate & by both front & back doors, excellent deterrent

NZB you should absolutely go with your instincts on this one, if getting a dog helps you to feel safer in your home, it's a great idea. No one knows how you feel about this except you.
It will company for when your partner is away, lots of fun and very rewarding. You sound like you've had quite a bit of experience with them anyway.
It's not as if you're gettting a guard dog is it - just a family pet.
