building surveyors
Hi quick question for any building surveyors out there. We've just submitted our EOI and didn't claim points for any skills shortage qualifications or experience (125 points) - my husband is a building surveyor/project manager and this wasn't on the skills shortage list.
But i've just read somewhere that in NZ they often lump building surveying/quantity surveying together and i was wondering if this is true . IF so is it worth getting hubbys skills assessed (he does qs for projects he runs up to £1m i think). I've looked at a couple of NZ university courses and there doesn't seem to be much building surveying in them, just QSing.
does any body have any experience in this area?
thanks

I doubt QS/Building Surveyors are lumped in together, they are such different disciplines

funnily enough koruconnect are recruiting in the UK at the moment - they have an advertisement running in the RISC magazine at the moment. What was your experience of them??
..we will probably be forced to go down the job offer route but have put our EOI in without job offer on the off-chance really- in an ideal world we'd go over with residency and spend a few weeks sorting out where we want to live before having to think about jobs....

Regarding BS's, they seem to be few and far between in NZ. In the UK, BS's tend to be active in the residential and commercial market and are usually the first to be instructed for property surveys and valuations, whereas in NZ, those who carry out house inspections are referred to as Inspectors and in my experience are people from a building trade background, whilst valuers are a separate profession and from memory you must be a registered valuer to value property (although 'all' they do in reality is compare the sold prices of similar properties that have sold in the locality).
If your husband is a qualified BS (ie to degree level), and has relevant experience to his quals, he should acquire plenty of points.
If I can assist you any further, please PM me. Best of luck.

Re: building surveyors
Hi mpg
thanks for taking the time to reply - OH does not really do the typical building surveyor work. He is a Chartered RISC building surveyor but works mainly as a client side property consultant doing project management and monitoring, this includes some QS work (but he is not a qualified QS) and also a lot of contract administration..
..his experience and qualifications seem to fall between a couple of stools - he cannot claim points as a QS as he does not have the qualification (although he does do this as part of this job) and cannot claim points as a project manager as points for this require a degree in construction management. ... so null points for skills shortage...
it appears from what i've seen in NZ a lot of building surveyors are also QS's -but i'm buggered if we can work out how we can get any skills shortage points.

The degree and professional membership must be in any event, relevant to his work, including that of QS duties. Why cannot therefore, he claim as a [P]QS (which is part of his work) and thus is relevant to his quals?
