Bring Caravan from UK
Hi can anyone tell me if I would be able to sell a caravan easy as I am thinking of bringing one over in a container when I move next Spring but only to sell and pay for my container? Is caravaning popular or is it all motorhomes? don't want to be stuck with it gathering moss. All answers appreciated.

Re: Bring Caravan from UK
Yes if you price it right it'll sell
caravans are very popular here and can be twice the price of their equivalents in the uk Heres just one example 5994 = $11321 :( will it cost you $12000 to get it here and road legal ?? https://www.autotrader.co.uk/classif...us=1500&page=1 Lunar Stellar 2004 - Affordable Caravans |

Thanks for that :-)

Re: Bring Caravan from UK
You need to investigate that a bit more. I think you are supposed to keep the import for X years else import duty / taxes are payable

Re: Bring Caravan from UK
Good point, has anyone brought one over? can they confirm if you have to keep it for X amount of years? I know it applies with a car but not sure with a caravan ....

Re: Bring Caravan from UK
This might help:
https://www.customs.govt.nz/globalas...le-imports.pdf Note the "have owned it for 12mths" criteria as well as continue to own it in NZ in order to avoid the import duties. NZTA class caravans as "light trailers" ie a form of motor vehicle (hence registration and rego fees payable). https://www.nzta.govt.nz/vehicles/ve...ight-trailers/ |
Re: Bring Caravan from UK
I think it's 2 years for a car but not sure about a caravan.

Re: Bring Caravan from UK
It is 2years as per that NZ Customs factsheet I linked to.

Re: Bring Caravan from UK
Certainly worth it - I imported a Lunar Clubman last year and it is worth $10-12k more here (net of costs). Keep it for two years and use for a full NZ tour over that period then sell. You will need to get a gas and electrical cert after arrival (say $200) and if you want to use it freedom camping a self containment modification ($500).

Re: Bring Caravan from UK
the other thing to be aware of is as the seller you are responsible for making the caravan NZ compliant, So that's electrics, water and gas. Gas Regs by the way have just become more stringent.
None of this is impossible but it does add to the costs. Look at www.trademe.co.nz for an idea of what you'll get for your van. |
Re: Bring Caravan from UK
How did you get on tinalouie? Did you ship a caravan and if so who did you use, was it in a container or on a RoRo?

Re: Bring Caravan from UK
bringing a caravan is a GOOD thing but be very aware you will be responsible for ensuring it is NZ compliant.
That's converting all the gas and electrical's and that can mount up. Plus you have to get it rego'd and that has issues as well I believe. None of this is insurmountable but it's not just a case, as some seem to think, of slapping a NZ plate on and saying 'see ya mate'. I do electrical conversions and someone, nameless, thought that they could make a mint by bringing in two vans and flicking them off. Wrong. He's currently being prosecuted for selling two 'illegal' vehicles. My involvement in this case is as a SME and so far he's looking at being $20k out of pocket!!! So I'd say yes, bring it, we so wish we did when we came over, but don't cut corners. (and I mean that on the road as well!) |
